While picking out my gelding's hooves today, I noticed he had a substantial sized stone wedged into the white line of his back hoof. He is shod infront and barefoot behind. It took me a good bit of time and brute force to get the stone out and it seemed to have been in quite far. I'm now wondering whether or not I should've done something with the hole, ie pack it with cotton wool or something?

They can be difficult to prise out, I use the tip of a corkscrew on my penknife to get the blighters out without leaving too much hole. I don't pack the hole as they are quite shallow.
It's a good way to monitor how tight the white line is although when they are on very gravelly land, it can be hard to avoid getting them sometimes.

I try to avoid stones getting stuck by cleaning the WL with a wire brush and bradawl or horseshoe nail before and after riding each time. I also clean it if the horse has gravel in it's living area.

Thanks. He had another one wedged in the same hole today so I think it's going to happen everyday. I'm just worried about infection or setting off an abscess if it's really deep as I think it is.

you can always put kerratex (sp) hoof putty in the hole if need be, thats what I do.

I tried the hoof putty but with a biggish hole the stones just get wedged in the putty, I now clean out the hole daily and use cotton wool soaked in hoof disinfectant like chrisritch, works much better for me as we are on a very gravelly yard.
