Stop tail rubbing - what product

Friends horse has pinworm which has been unsucessfully treated for four months now at a cost of £300 +. She wants to put something on her tail to stop her rubbing the hair out. She remembers putting something on her tail a couple of years ago when she had pinworm b4 which worked very well. Says was in a white bottle with red and white design. Gel was trasparent. Yard owner had bottle left over which she gave her to use. Says it was possibly called 'stop itch' or 'kill itch' 'ditch the itch'????Anyone any idea of product name please?

As the itching is originating from the pinworm in the anus, I fail to see how applying a lotion to the tail can possibly stop her urge to itch.
Panacur Equine guard, Embotape etc, need to be given every couple of weeks for as long as it takes to hit pinworm hard. They won't kill pinworm eggs, hence why one or two treatments often aren't enough. Also make sure your friend has thoroughly cleansed any likely surface that her horse has been scratching her bottom on, including haynets etc.

5 day course of panacur followed up 2 weeks later with a double dose Pyrantel wormer (Strongid P) worked for mine. If they are really persistent you can double dose again 2 weeks later.

This is far more effective than Ivermectin or Moxidectin based wormed based on how they are metabolised by the body. Loads of wormers say they treat pinworm but are actually not effective - the chemical is broken down early in the gut and the active ingredient doesn't actually reach the rectum where the worms are.

I actually saw the worm come out and lay eggs - super gross and fascinating at the same time

Apart from worming for pin worm, have your friend wash around the anus daily, often you can see where the eggs have been laid - a creamy substance around the outside of the anus. When dry smear Vaseline all around the anus this will prevent the pinworms from laying. Another thing to try is Neem Oil.
