My bloody coloured horse is driving me up the sodding wall lately.
He is, to say the least, forward going, I hack out alone because short of R's supermodel legged 17hher, nothing else seems to keep up with my little horse's quick pace.
Now thats fine, I don't mind a forwards going horse, better than having a dopey one that needs a lot of leg, but OH MY LIFE this horse is starting to get on my nerves. Now he knows every hack inside out, I have even tried to trick him into thinking he is somewhere he isnt...but the truth is, as soon as we head homeward he jogs, sideways, pulls me, tosses his head, snorts, flings his tale about like a tart and generally finds every possible way to piss me right off.
What can I do to stop him jogging? Someone please end my miserable hacks, jogging on a bouncy, skinny horse is about the more uncomfortable thing I've ever done.

My horse used to jog on the way home from hacks. My instructor suggested turning him away from home and praising him when he walked, then turning him back. As soon as he started jogging again I repeated it until he caught on, which he did very quickly and almost never jogs now. Mind you we did spend an afternoon when I thought I was never going to make it home as we seemed to get further and further away - it was pouring with rain too, but I was determined not to give in!

On the rare occasion mine jogs I make her stop by making her jog as slowly as possible, using the most energy she can, almost like a piaffe. It stops her very quickly so may be another option for you although I think your coloured looks a lot more lively

agree with hullabaloo, this will take time but they soon learn thats its not so much fun turning the opposite way while out hacking or try turning him in circles but try not get too stressed about as this can make it worst

good luck

I have tried turning him, unfortunately he has a very short fuse and this wound him up, stressing him out on hacks is not my idea of fun!
Carthorse- never heard of this but will give it a try. I hate jogging because it gets out of doing any real work, I have been trotting him very very slowly, making him work a lot harder that jogging does, I'd just love to actually walk home from a hack for once!

Have you tried riding on a very long rein and sitting like a sack of spuds, very heavy in the saddle and relaxed (only if safe of course lol). This works on my mum's TB.

Feel your pain Rosiie, it's a really annoying habit! xx

I did a 10 mile sponsered ride on my cob and he jogged almost the whole way! It was so annoying, and in the end i got so many blisters and got bored of bouncing up and down i wedged his face between my friends horse's butt cheeks in front. worked a treat, until he realised if he lifted his head he could rest his chin on the horses back!!

The twisting skin thing sond like a good plan!
I use the loose rein and sack of spuds technique too, but have to time it perfectly otherwise wed just go very fast homewards!
Hens a bit like Oshk, on the way home he makes me feel sick he jogs so much! Makes my boobs hurt! Ive tried the turning from home technique and all that happened was he got very wound up and started to rear!
When he jogs i slow him right down, then as he breaks into walk i have to give the rein and slump into the saddle. He will walk relaxed for a while, but eventually will break into a jog again. I just have to keep repeating it, but at least it stops it from being a constant jog all the way home, stops him from working himself into a tizz too!
Im starting to think Oshk and Hen might be related, Oshk just got a bit more scope and skinnier legs! Think Oshk might be a bit trickier than Hen too!

No one can keep up with Hens walk either, its so frustrating trying to hack out with anyone and constantly having to wait for them!

Forrest's exactly the same, he HAS to jog for the last half of the hack. He doesn't even know the hacking routes as we've just move yards but somehow he knows when we're exactly half way round.

Turning, slowing down etc just get him even more wound up, I just don't bother hacking unless I have to.

My horse jogs all the way out on the hack and all the way back...................he is 30 odd now and still does it......

He does it on a short rein and a long one

wow , sounds very much like one of my ponies as i have the very same problem with him , however i find he is no different wether he is by himself or with other horses. no matter what i do he demands to jog trot and my arms get pulled out my sockets as he is very strong on hacks and although i like him fizzy a walk would be nice .

however my advice would be to go on a hack every other day if possible and only walk also when doing this give trust in him i found by giving my pony a long rein helped as he was able to look around rather than concentrating on going fast (howver this was hard to do first of all as it felt he was goin to take off as i let go of the rein but it worked) and when trust is gained it helps to take my feet out my striups and relax when it is safe to do so in turn relaxing the horse . it works when my pony is it the right mood .so i hope this helps you too . x

Know exactly how annoying it is, my cob, mid-20s still does it

So when she does I try a loose rein, if that doesn't work then halt transitions until she listens. If that fails then I give up

Poppy is the same as well! she's 23 and has never learnt. We go sideways canter on the spot and rear quite alot!If i ride on a short rein it makes her worse and the rears get bigger.I just give up now and let her get on with it.I ride her on a long rein. It's nice to no i'm not the only one with a unstable horse! She's drives me mad but i would'nt change her.Her saving grace is her jump!

Do you turn around to head back, or go a diff. route each time? Chloe used to be terrible when it came to jogging. So I just trotted home. And she hardly does it anymore, just strides home very nicely. I don't know why it worked.

I have the exact same problem with my pony. it doesnt matter which route i do she jogs on the way home its a pain in the arse, nothing stops her and i end up getting really annoyed by her which makes it worse.
i'm going to try the skin twist thing although tbh i doubt she will even notice she is so pig headed.
if you find something that works please let us know!!

vicki i have the same problem with Frankie...........and now as we have no school I have to hack all the time. He jogs going out, on the common, coming home, and i hate it. he gets really wound up as well, and he tosses his head.....snorts......

*sigh* I'll have to keep going out until he calms down. I got really mad at him yesterday as well
