If your horse spooked and took off, or got strong, and you were on a track that was too narrow to circle him, how would you bring him back to you?

Relax, sit "heavy", sing and ask for a downward transition.

Tensing up, shrieking and going up their neck is only asking them to go faster.

If you know in advance that your horse is likely to put you in this situation spend time in the school teaching it that pulling back strongly on a neckstrap ALWAYS means slow up. Then remember to do that rather than getting into a fight.

Hey, hey. That was me on Saturday.

We survived the beaters and the guns next to the bridlepath but the horse-eating cow behind a hedge was a fright too many and he took off down the slope towards the road; a distance of no more than 40 metres.

He never really got time to get into a good stride and I grabbed one rein and turned his nose, head and neck into the hedge. Would have been a bit different if he had managed to get up a bit of speed.

Phew. Just a shame about the tree that I scraped past on the way. Am now sporting a lovely rosy graze underneath the blusher on my left cheek.
