Storage Nightmare

I have recently become the very proud owner of some nice new rugs (there is a first for everything, no more hand me downs). So at the weekend I went and purchase a plastic Cupbord to put them in to keep everything else out.

However upon installing my new purchase I noticed that 'my area' at the yard is evry increasingly messy (this has not gone un noticed before) and no matter how I try to tidy it I feel that there has to be some way of better utilising my space, which granted is not alot but it must be the same all over.

I have a big tack box (known as the tardis) but apart from that everything else is in random dustbins and containers.

I am entertaining the idea that I might get one of these lovely feed bins (metal or plastic) so that all my feed can be secure and safe, but also a little more organised that random containers.

What I would like to know is how does everyone else store their stuff and keep it all tidy?

Oh and any suggestions welcome.

I have decided that Saturday is going to be a big clean out day.

I have a metal feed bin which is handy for storing all my feed and takes up less room than two plastic bins.

However, if by chance you know someone who is handy at DIY, take a look at some of the fantastic tack storage ideas on this website. My OH is currently planning a cupboard thing for my stuff as space at my yard is very limited. http://elitetackdesign.com/PBTrunks.html

I have some old filing cabinets that I store a lot of bits & pieces in the place still looks like a bombs hit it though - the only problem at the moment is that there have been quite a few break ins so my conservatory has been turned into a tack room :(

Stackable plastic boxes and plastic drawers! You can move them wherever they need to be, no hunting to find things as you can see through to what is in the box, and it keeps the majority of things organised. Eg of things in each box: boot/bandages, grooming equipment, reflective gear, spare bits of tack, stable rugs, turnout rugs, saddlecloths, show gear, first aid things....

The big deep boxes are good for rugs, and the smaller ones for grooming things etc. The sets of plastic drawers are good too as you assign certain things to each drawer and then you always know what is there.

I've seen some interesting threads on HHO before, were people have posted photos of their solutions for keeping their tack room tidy, hopefully they will come along and post their photos again. But meanwhile, some photos that I've found through Google image search:

I just think having it so tidy makes like a shop for a thief. I work on the premise that anything of value is kept at home and the only leave tatty headcollers hanging up. I do have used computer crates that I bought off e-bay in which I store all my spare rugs. I aim to make it so I know everything is but nobody else does.

I, sadly, have to agree with this. I used to have a tackroom with all rugs wrapped in clear plastic bags with sizes and thickness labels on them, and all spare tack and bits and bobs in clear plastic tubs, again fully labelled. Then saddles and bridles on racks above. We had the lot stolen, and it drives me mad that the thief got clean and labelled stuff to sell on. Nowadays everything is hidden away all over the place (with a strange list hidden away saying what is where!).

Have a chat with a carpenter and get something made that you design yourself. The materials are not as expensive as you might think and you can try your bargaining skills regarding the cost of labour. There are some great ideas in the pictures in the above posts.

My Dad works in the biology labs at a university and they were renovating one of the labs. He managed to get me an old cupboard that i turned on its side and used as a box. It was that popular at my new yard that when they renovated another lab he claimed all the cupboards so about 5 of us have one now! think we all do it different with our boxes but i store any rugs i might need in their bags in there and have little storage boxes within it with bits and bobs in, my hat bag a grooming kit :) only problem is its not waterproof but as it is under the roof of the stables the only problem is when the rain is horizontal! going to put some of the shed roofing stuff (sorry... don't know the name) round it to make it water tight :)

Ps. just been through ALL my photos and don't have a single one with my box in :(

Some of those tack rooms look like well stocked tack shops. Mine is a bit of a mess, with plastic bins and a plastic cabinet, but I know where everything is. I'm very fortunate to be in an end stable so have the front of the stable and a wall to utilise. I've done this admirably.

I bought this and did a bit of rearranging so my saddle fits in the bottom with shelves above. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-...s=plastic+storage+cupboard#productDescription

My rugs are kept in the stable on drainpipes threaded with rope and suspended from the rafters.

It is a lot messier at the mo as Ive just started a reshuffle to fit more rugs in!

OP with limited space I think I'd go for a tall set of shelves to get the most out of the space and then boxes, I find without boxes things disappear down the back of the shelves and cobwebs/ dust collect on less used items! though I really like everything to have its place it is put away in so perhaps I'm not the best person to 'help'!
