Strange “growth” on penis?

I noticed last night my pony has got a growth type thing on the end of his penis- literally sticking out next to the urethra (it’s not under the skin if that makes sense).
Annoyingly I didn’t manage to get a photo as didn’t have my phone and he rarely gets it out in front of me (he’s an in private wee-er😂). The best way I’d describe it (not to sounds really strange) is it was like a large blackberry except the small balls that make up the “blackberry” are larger and fewer… the whole thing probably being the size of well… a blackberry.
Black in colour.
He is due a clean, I was going to try for the first time myself but am now terrified of hurting him… does anyone have any idea what this may be? Would it be something that would be sorted with a sheath clean or is it a vet job as don’t want to hang around if so.
Appreciate it’s tricky with no photo, will try and get him to “show” me again!!

This was a worry of mine after some googling. Also says it’s more common in older geldings and he’s 22. Think I may get the vet out to be safe😌
It could be a squamous cell carcinoma as that's a common location. For me, it would be a vet job as IF it's something like that that quicker intervention is better.
Could also be a sarcoid of course, but your description rings carcinoma alarm bells.

Yup vet check, I do have photos ;) horse was 20
this is what I spotted first, it was actually a build up of layers or dead skin

When the dead skin was removed this was underneath.

Not biopsied, presumed SCC treated with efudix (flouracil cream) and liquid nitrogen, did require 2 applications. ]

Did have some return 6 years later (but quite old/other things going on by then so kept an eye on rather than treated).
