Fudge Is just over 1 years old and was spade on tues. All went well had recommended feed that evening has been doing little crys on and off ESP in the night. She has been on painkillers yesterday and today.

The strange behaviour... She seems to be treating one of her balls like a puppy licking it constantly, mouthing it and picking it up like a mum would a baby then taking it to a nest she has made on the sofa by dragging all the cushions together. When she picks this ball up and holds it in her mouth she crys.

The vets said she is well in herself eating fine but not drinking too much and the would is coming on well.

Is this normal behaviour could it just be the painkillers making her act odd?

Her behaviour sounds like that of a phantom pregnancy in entire bitches! I can only imagine she is feeling some discomfort and is using the ball as a comfort tool? If the wound is healing and she is eating/drinking normally then I would just give it time. :)

That's exactly what I thought it just sounded silly as she's just been spade.
I'm hoping it doesn't last for long as it's quite odd lol

That's exactly what my bitch did when she was having a phantom. Just keep an eye on her and ring the vet if you have any further concerns, try not to fuss or mollycoddle her, if she is an anxious sort it will make her worse.

My girl has just been spayed and she showed signs of a phantom pregnancy - nest building etc. She even had milk. The vets put her on some sort of water tablets which cleared it up :)

Sounds like she is going through a pseudo pregnancy by the side effect..How soon after her last heat was she spayed?
sometimes a spay particularly if to close to the last oestrus can mess with the hormones being produced, progesterone to be exact :P, and can cause pseudopregnancy.

Tell your vet about the signs she is showing if they continue for more than a few days, or if she is overly possessive and aggressive and they will be able to give you a shot to sort it out.

Its an uncommon side effect of the spay.

thank you yeh her last season was febuary. The practise manager is going to call me back although reception said i will have to pay the appointment fee as it is not related to the spay but i will be arguing the toss on that!

Its not necessarily a side effect of the spay if it was done on tuesady and her last heat was in february.
Thats more than the 3 week recommended waiting time to avoid it as a complication of a spay,So im afraid that the receptionist was right to put it down as a separate condition.

the vet has said to see how she gets on and if it really affects her eating and drinking or she becomes more distressed then we can bring her in. He said sometimes its best to let it run its course naturally
