I have a 17 year old mare on loan and she'd been turned out with my 2 geldings for 10 days and then on Monday she came into season and became obsessed with the MARE in the adjoining field, totally ignoring my two geldings and on Wednesday night she managed to climb through the fence into the field with the mare next door, ripping her rug and pulling a shoe in the process and got herself into a right state, I caught her and brought her home away from the field and she settled down once the mare was out of sight, she whinnied for a while and then settled down to eat grass.....then on Friday morning we tried her out in the field again but she galloped straight past my two geldings and went to this mare who was waiting for her by the fence and they both started spraying so we had no choice but to bring her in again for her own safety as we obviously don't want her to injure herself. Once back home in our own field out of sight she settled down again.....although she is still in season.
I'm finding this very hard to understand as this has happend with another mare we had, she was totally obessed with the same mare in the next field and was constantly in season whenever she see saw her, so she too had to be separated...it just seems a shame that our mare now has to be confined to a small paddock on her own instead of being in a nice big 10 acre with my two geldings and its upsetting the balance, my two geldings come in off the big field at night but during the day she has to stay on her own, it dosent seem to bother her but I cant risk turning her out in there again.
Has anybody out there experienced this sort of behaviour ??? I dont know much about this other mare, my mare's owners say she's never behaved like this before, she's been mareish and flirty with geldings when she's in season but nothing out of the ordinary...
