Hi all,

My 16 yo cob mare has got a rather strange lameness and I wondered if anyone could give me any ideas about what they think it could be, as I am worrying! I am going to call the vet out anyway on Tuesday, but having never been lame before (I have had her 10 years!) I am a bit stuck for ideas.

She is lame on her off side fore, and it appears like what I can only describe as a 'foot sore' lameness i.e. shes not lame in walk or trot on a soft or hard level surface but on a wonky track or stony path shes a bit 'ouchy'.

It first came about after jumping her at our local riding club XC practice day, she landed after a fence and seemed to have tweaked something -I rested her for a few mins then gave her a walk round and after about 15-20 mins she seemed fine in all paces and popped a little log and was absolutely fine and we rode home with no problems. When I got home I checked her all over, checked her feet and her legs and there was no heat or swelling in any area of her legs or feet, but I cold hosed them anyway just to be safe.

Since then (for last 6 weeks) she has been absolutely fine, back in work doing everything and no problems. Then I was lungeing her last week and she seemed to tweak again and was lame in the same way. I gave her a week off as I had university exams and was hoping this would solve it, but sadly after I have come back it seems to be the same.

I have bought some Devils Relief to help her with any pain thats in there and to help the joint, and after a few doses she seems much better turning on it and is less stiff. I have also got her some Cortaflex today so I am hoping I may see a change tomorrow or Monday after that has kicked in a little more. For the last two days I have walked her out for about 20 mins on a flat track, she seemed only slightly stiff to start with when I turned to shut the yard gate, but on returning home she was really free in her action and her walk was totally normal.

I know her age does probably suggest a wear and tear problem, but it doesn't strike me as arthritis as I know a couple of arthritic horses and shes totally different to them. I am not sure whether to box rest as with appearing to be a stiffening problem it may make it worse???

Let me know what you think! :)

It doesn't sound like footsoreness, it sounds like soft tissue damage that pulls when her foot is not totally level. That would also fit with coming out stiff and wearing off with exercise, and with getting better after rest and then re-tweaking. My guess is that she has pulled a ligament inside her foot, with a very slight possibility it could be in her shoulder.

Hopefully this is complete rubbish and all she has done is bruised her foot treading on a stone.

If she was mine I would turn her away for a week and see what happens, but if you are concerned and want to take no risks then you definitely need a vet I'm afraid.

I hope it's simple.

Yes thats kind of like what I was thinking. I knew it wasn't foot soreness its just the only way I can describe it! Thanks :)
