OH is building a fence for a lady up the road. The land her horses are kept on is actually an old landfill site - I posted about it waaaaaaaaay back, when I was worried that her horses had so little grass, that you could see the glass and metal poking up through the ground....
Anyway, that is irrelevant now; I was not expecting to hear what my OH just told me! Apparently, whilst he was doing her fence, she accosted him as to 'what kind of horse your girlfriend rides' - OH was cagey, as I would expect him to be, for her manner was somewhat confrontational. She wanted to know if I rode a ******, which I dont, but only one person around here does, so he knew instantly who she was talking about. Apparently, said person called the vet - not the RSPCA, but the VET - out back at Christmas time, because one of the ponies in the field was having difficulties in labour.....
The pony in question was only twenty months old herself. The foal was born dead, and the owner claims to have had no knowledge of her pregnancy; she allegedly bought her very cheap from a gypsy, with no knowledge of her background. The filly's conformation is not good, and to be fair, I would never in a million years have thought she was in foal
What I dont understand is this lady's open hostility towards people who are simply trying to help. She should have nothing to fear; the ponies, although they have little grass, are generally well rounded and happy-looking; they have hay every day, hard feed and water, and although the paddock is only half an acre, they have adequate shelter. They're never ridden; she keeps them merely as pets, but they are well looked after, even by my standards.
So why on earth was she so upset about someone else calling the vet out to her horse, when she was not there to do it herself? It all seems a bit strange to me, and luckily OH acted dumb, for I think if she knew that we knew the people in question, she'd be marching down there to have a go at them.....
