Any advice? I noticed a small graze on my gelding's heel the other day, nothing major, not much blood or anything, so cleaned and wound powdered it and left him out
Yesterday it looked really quite scabby, and almost like mud fever, but it is on his black foot, and there's no mud yet? Admitedly the grass is wet, but there is no mud at all! I cleaned it up again and it bled a bit but no ooze or nasty discharge, so wound powdered it again, left to dry, then used green oils before turning him back out.
Could this possibly be mud fever?

Or is it just a graze

Should I bring him in for a few days to let it heal? He seems sound on it.
Any advice greatly appreciated!

You don't need mud to have mud feaver (it's a term used widely to describe amongst other things - cracked heals).

Greese his heals up as it sounds as if they are being affected by the wet weather. Vaseline is perfect, and you need to do it daily - if not twice a day.

My mare has had a touch of mud fever before though, and that was kind of chalky, flaky scabs...when i cleaned his off it was quite sore red skin underneath. Maybe hers was never mud fever!
Is Green oils as good as vaseline or not? Have both, just used the green oils as I thought it might be better i there is any infection there.
Also his heels don't really look cracked at all apart from this one sore patch...should I do all 4 just in case?

Hi Emma, yes you can use green oils, but vaseline or udder cream or the like will probably be much more effective.
