hello all!

just wanting some theories as to what's going on with Ron's legs at the moment...

he had a small touch of mud fever in feb which all cleared up pretty quickly, just cleansing with hibiscrub, and applying a barrier cream to the dry skin.

but now, as he's starting to moult, the hair on his back legs is coming off in clumps, leaving almost bald patches behind... the skin doesn't seem to be itchy, or sore, or even damaged, it's just odd. It starts up the front, near his stifle, and runs down the front to his hocks, then inside the legs, and down the inside to his fetlocks where it disappears.

any ideas?

My friends horse started with this on its belly, which has since spread all over her body, not itchy and the hair is regrowing ive done some googlying and think its summer alopecia.

Alf has exactly the same, and he also got it last year at coat change. It wasn't bothering him, so I ignored it, and it was gone by the time his summer coat came through

I've had two ponies get it on their face/neck around the time that they were changing coats. They also never had a problem, the skin wasn't broken/sore/angry looking so I left it and, same as Auslander, they were fine by the time their summer coats came through.

Ron is older isn't he if I remember correctly? Not that he acted it when we met! Our old (28yo) pony has had this for years, but because it doesn't bother him, and the summer coat comes through fine we don't worry. Summer alopecia sounds like it could be it. :)
