Bit of history my 13yr old pony is lame again. :( He had mild lami a few weeks ago but been fine since on bare paddock. He has had bone spavin in his hocks years ago, as well as a sacroiliac injury a couple of years ago.

Was wondering if anyone might have any ideas what this could be? I'm having the vet next week so will hopefully find out then.

Hes not 100% right in a straight line, hes dragging his toes abit but apart from that not too bad. But when you lunge him on a circle he is 98% sound on the right rein but obviously lame on the left.

It appears to be his back right leg but theres no heat or bumps but it is *slightly* swallon below his stifle, with this leg he has also been sometimes standing with it not resting but not putting his full weight on it either - kind of half and half.

Hes been like this for nearly 4 weeks now. Any ideas?

He sounds like my 'old girl'. She has had various problems with her back but the current trouble is in her pelvis.
Have you tried contacting anyone who does alternative therapies? I have a wonderful lady called Jin Langstone who comes over to France for us every few months. She's amazing!

If I were you I'd spend my money on her rather than the vet if it's not a visible injury. I'm not saying for one second that your vet's useless; mearly that, by now, it may be worth looking at other treatments.

I hope you find out what's ailing him and he's 100% asap!

No idea - but your vet will probably be able to help you.

Why have you left him like this for 4 weeks???

Thanks snoopyinfrance will take a look. :) They seemed to make their way through the vet dictionary of problems don't they?!!! I'm sure thats his bed time reading!

amymay - because when he went lame I originally thought he'd pulled something on the hard ground so thought i'd give him a few days to see if he would come right. Then came down with lami literally days later so presumed he was just unlevel because of the lami, given bute for a week (then sound due to bute).

Then when he came off bute, lame on the back leg again. :( He was booked in for a vet to see him today but they cancelled this morning so now next week!

Ah, so the vet has seen him (when he went down with the laminitis), that's reasuring.

Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious.

The dragging toe, the resting of the leg, the lameness worse on a circle sounds like it could be the spavin playing up but I'm not a vet so just guessing. My horse has spavin and those are his symptoms. He had his joints medicated on Monday and is due out in the field tomorrow following box rest.

If it is spavin then the vet will be able to advise on the appropriate treatment as its my understanding that in some cases its better to let the hock fuse, but in other cases its some times better to prevent this from happening by using Tildren. But I am speculating that it's spavin and it might be something else. Best see what the vet says, he might flexion test him or get you to take him in for a lameness work up to assess the extent of the injury.

Good luck keep us posted. x
