Im hoping you guys can help me shed some light on what u think this lump is.

Its very hard and as you can see from my picture that I can 'grab' it and it does move about slightly.

Just wondering if you reckon its a bite or a sting from something? or something more sinister.

I'm thinking that if it does or doesn't change in some way by Monday I'm going to get the vet.

I'm not sure weather it was just a fly she was kicking at or weather me messing with it was bothering her.

Not the greatest of photos as was difficult to show how big it was.

Swelling from fly bites - probably the horrid little black things that are plaguing mine at the moment. You might want to check along her midline too - they tend to bite all the way along.

My mare has something a bit similar to that - same place, just extends a touch further across. I did a post a few weeks back and I think the general consensus was that it's nothing sinister, and has mars get older they can get them too, or from fly bites etc. I've been coating mine up with an insane amount of fly spray and contemplating buying her an udder cover for her snuggy (if only I could find her rug...!)

thanks for the comments. I will just keep an eye on it see what it does. we have had an insane amount of horse flies lately.

Have just had vet out to something very similar on my mare- fly bites- not horse flies but the smaller black midgey things, he told us to cold hose and cover with fly spray daily and wait for the swelling to go down- it will, but slowly!

I had this last Wednesday - cold hosed and icepack in towel seemed to give some relief but by Thurs afternoon had got a lot bigger, harder and moving forwards plus some swelling starting in inner thighs, was very uncomfortable and reluctant to move, especially hind legs . Vet Friday morning and she is on 5 days of Metacam and Trimediazine, started to go down by Sat dinnertime and she is a lot happier now. Like others fly bites suspected, we have had some huge horse flies for over a week now and they obviously don't mind fly repellent as she was smothered in it plus they are sitting happily on one of my others wearing a new Rambo Protector

My friends mare has had this a couple of times, may be different but will mention it! her mare had some kind of fly lay eggs in the mares skin and it was really sore and swollen, it took an injection to kick the eggs out and clear the swelling, I cant for the life of me remember the type of fly but its more common in mares this time of year.

Thats a big lump. Rosies appears to have gone down a bit but is still very hard and not quite as movable as before.
