Hi

I have just took on a stable yard with 7 stables and 13 acres. I would like to get a few lambs/sheep and some goats. Does anyone know where I can rehome some from or where I can get some from? Also where do I apply for a holding licences?

Thanks

As for rehoming them, its not very often you see sheep/goats going for free, price of the lamb at the moment is pitiful anyway so they would want at least something for it. Try a local cattle market to pick some up, try Melton Mowbrays cattle market, not all that far and normaly get some bargains on the right day!

get your holding number from defra first, and a flock number for sheep. you will need these numbers for the movement liscense. you also need to keep a medicine book, and ear tag if not already ear tagged. pheone defra direct they are very helpful.

the RSCPA nearly always have animals like that for rehoming, if they don't have them at your local centre then usually they can put you in touch with someone who can!

Then you can feel good about giving a nice home to neglected animals :)

You could always just ask a local farmer if he wants to graze a few of his sheep on your land...It would be a win win situation for you both!

He gets a bit of free grazing and will look after them in terms of worming, feet paring and stuff and you get a companion for your horse. You could learn first hand how to look after them before diving in the deep end, and maybe if all goes well you could take one or two on permanently for yourself.
