Ok - bear with me on this!!
I only want to know because I was wondering if it has any effect on your nerves? Or do you just think it would make you wobble off?!
I am half tempted to have a 'drink' before my dressage test on sunday - it might make me relax more, but then again it might have a bad effect too!! lol
Iam not so worried about the jumping, as I know Meg will do her best for me in that phase - with or without me! Dressage is our nemesis as we both get tense, ridgid and look like planks!!
Any ideas / suggestions / real life tips most welcome.

i guess one drink would be ok- but no more- i've ridden pissed as a newt but only on exercise, nearly mowing down students at the Royal Ag. college, mind you, that was over 35 years ago!

I dont think many people in their right minds would ride a horse while drunk. Yes they may ride the horse after having a drink or two and Im sure lots of people have ridden to the pub and back again after consuming an alcoholic beverage, but drunk I would say rather silly. Yes I have ridden, and still do ride, after having a drink or two although I cant say that it makes any difference to my riding as I am not in the slightest nervous to ride my horses.

Ditto.

Jumping lessons first thing in the morning back in the college years after social night or the balls were wlays interesting....

And hunting! 'Dutch courage' and all of that :) Though took the youngster out and spent the wholemeet leaping and spinning 360's...so just had a glass appearing, grabbing it mid spin and downing it in mid spin and lobbing the glass back and repeated for most of the meet! Went to my head rather quickly I must say!

It takes the 'edge' off usually, like anything when you have a drink really.

Not advocating it and definately have never been absolutely sloshed or paraletic riding obviously!!!

Have seen a good few funny sights out hunting of people that have over done the port and brandy....think there was a collection once of someone ending up off in the mud over every fence in photos, and the trying to get back on the horse after!

alot of people do, at the common ridings in scotland, its the done thing really, personally i couldnt do it, when im drunk i can hardly stay on my feet let alone stay on taz!

Right, so 1 drink might be a good idea - but no more!!???
Forgot about hunting and the dutch courage port! I've done that a few times, but always thought it was to get me warm lol
Never done it for a dressage test.... and for some reason Iam more nervous than EVER before.

Always rescue remedy you could try?

Ah I always thought the 'to keep warm excuse' was just to make it more acceptable for drinking before noon!!! :p

Ended up on novice horse that I'd never ridden before and accidently went with the jumping lot a couple of years back, I started bricking it as it was serious jumps that day and all I got for the remainder of that ride was an assortment of various hipflasks shoved in my hand every few minutes!

Ended up being the best day I'd had out hunting and carried on with the jumping out then!

I had my best ever gallop on Woody after a couple of pints of cider I think it was because I had some balls to let him go(he was a ex racer) I had galloped him but always held him back. I had a bit of a I dont care factor lol. After that I had a massive confidence boost but didnt require alcohol. lol

I frequently go on pub ride and drives. But had never got soo pissed I cant stand lol.

riding a horse while drunk?????????
i can understand havign one glass to calm your nerves -maybe - but not drunk
omg i think its horrid - poor horse - we had a lady at yard who used to get upset, drink - bomb her horse around like an idiot then collapse in ther horses stable - smoking on his straw bed - w eand the other liveries soon put an end to it!!!!!!!!!!!
There are otehr things you can take that really helps - kalms tablets, balms rescue remedy.
I just dont agree with mixing alcohol and animals - look for another way xxx

Tbf....everytime we watch the P2P's or Team Chasing.....our words are always 'No way in hell would I have the cahoney's for that....or at least would have to be very VERY intoxicated at the time!'

But then always challenged with the thought of just how plastered I'd have to be to get to that point where I'd decide it was a good idea to do it.....which was decidedly to the point where my balance and art of remaining upright would be affected somewhat!!!

Always stayed on board, it was the getting home that was interesting.

I bet!

Friends OH has always wondered about after hunting, after how much drink is drunk throughout the day...how the people that have to drive back themselves manage to drive home safely.

I think there is a fine line between having a couple and intoxicated. Me and a friend followed this woman home from my local who was legless and rode her horse home in the dark for the horses sake I followed her. I then got called a pervert!! I saw her in the pub not long ago and she said sorry and she thought I was a bloke following her home, CHEERS!!! Her horse was truely 100% bombproof!!

Now that to me is irresponsible.

Well I wouldnt fancy going around with a breathalyser at most International 3DEs,and as for the showjumpers!!!! FULLTIME JOB!! look at Paul Carberry pure genius on a horse and he is usually at bit erm Squiffy!!
Yes i have proof having worked for International eventers/SJers and as for the grooms well...... my plaits are lush when im squiffy!!!!

Yes! Yes! Good girl.

just got my times... maybe a lunch tipple is on the cards as dressage is at 2.44pm!!
Only time will tell to what I do... could I give the horse something too?? (kidding, but it is a thought!!) LOL

Hmm, well i have not ridden drunk as such - or i haven't drunk the same day as riding anyway. However, I have ridden and competed severly hungover so yes probably still drunk and all i can say is my showjumping round were sooo much better on those occasions. I very rarely do it now as can't stand feeling that rough although going round XC is the best hangover cure - no matter how rough you feel beforehand it must be the adrenalin after as hangover is always miraculously gone!!

I think i used to SJ better though as I was more relaxed when hungover or wasn't worrying so much about the round as was mor concerned on when i would stop feeling so hideous!! lol

I'm sure thats what people have said to police officers after a breath-test when driving their car...

"Yes I have driven, and still do drive, after having a drink or two although I cant say that it makes any difference to my driving as I am not in the slightest nervous to drive my car..."

Makes the statement look a bit different just by changing the word "horse" for "car"???

All of you that say, well that's different and don't be so stupid to compare the two...well i'm sorry but i see it as the same thing.

People always say that they are fine after a large glass of wine or a couple of pints and it doesn't make them drunk...well no it probably doesn't make you drunk but it makes your reaction time slower and it gives you delusions to your capabilities.

I'm not a tea total by any means and i like to have a drink with my friends but when out on the town we have a designated driver or a taxi booked...when riding to the pub we stick to soft drinks.

Maybe I'm just not an alcoholic and have to ride around with a hip-flask or someone who can't ride past a pub without having to suck on a beer mat?

And i don't care if your a good rider or your horse is 100% safe and knows it's way home this is just my opinion, you don't have to agree with it.

Well, I'm sure you'll all be disgusted, but I hacked to the pub one summer's evening with a friend and hacked back to her house, we thought it would be fun to turn both horses out together in her paddock, stayed and had a bbq and loads of wine, then apparently rode home in the dark with OH walking in road with torch, left tack on gate all night, could remember nothing in the morning! Those were the days!
