i hate hoof oil-it is gooey and it ends up over nice clean beige jods, i hate baby oil for hooves, doesnt stay put and attracts crap. so had a rather weird thaught about using clear nail polish? it would dry and still look shiny. i dont know if it would be really bad for their feet though if you just do it once in a blue moon ???????????????????????????

Another Effol fan here - used it on my farrier's recommendation and its a fab conditioner, leaves the feet shiny etc. Get at your feed merchant/tach shop. Its in a green tub (I think!!!! got me wondering now and I use it every day!)

Nail varnish would be

a Expensive
b Very bad for the feet as the hoof cannot breathe or take in moisture

Here you go - ive just got some of this for my horse. I use effol once a week on both mines hooves, which i put on before i put them in their stables at night so it then has ages to soak in. Then i just use that when im competing.

I use petroleum jelly - big tub from the pound shop! (The stuff you use for chapped lips and so on.) Good for dry heels and coronets, gives nice shiny black or white hooves, washes out of clothes and rubs into hands... I also have the black effol though "for best". Use same brush to apply both, and dont go mad - use according to the weather.
