Long but a bit of a pickler!
The horses on my yard have developed an odd rash over the last few weeks. It started roughly 3 1/2 4 weeks ago, just before we changed fields.
My boy, the horse in the pic to the left, is coloured, with a stripe that's pink at the bottom of his nose but mostly black either side, if that makes sense. He developed a very pink nose and little pin prick scabs on the white above it, though not too many. This lasted a couple of days and I thought is was sunburn so put some Sudocrem on it, thinking it might be nettle/bramble rash as they were just about to change fields so there wasn't much grass and the horses had taken to eating brambles etc. They have since been moved twice to different fields, the second a few days ago when the problem really set in.
I then noticed it had spread to the black and it hadn't been great weather so knew it wasn't sunburn, but kept putting the cream on to keep it under control. It was coming and going, but wasn't too bad. I also noticed a few other horses had it too so thought it must be a bit of reaction to something.
Yesterday another livery was washing her horse and said he'd developed lumps all over his body. They weren't sore but he had lost a patch of hair and they looked like fly bites but definately aren't. Other horses on the yard had developed symptoms similar to those of our horses, some worse than others. The interesting thing is that her horse is chesnut and these seem to be the worst effected. The vet didn't know what it was and gave a wash and tablets to the worst cases. According to the other livery, two of the horses went in to anaphalactic (sic) shock, so it's a reaction to something.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any advice/clues.
