Hi all,

Thanks to applecart14, Llewlyn, babybells and JRT for replying to my earlier post.

I have just got back from checking up on my old fella and am pleased to report that he is no longer colicing - and was happily grazing in his field.

I have given him 1 more bute at lunch time (so he can have up to another 2 this eve if needed) and left him out enjoying the sunshine.

I hope that this is the end of this episode of colic - but it has niggled on and lingered for a week and a half now - with some days him being fine - others being very uncomfortable - so will just have to see how he goes.

I think this time has worried me much more as its gone on longer than previous eposides - combined with the fact that he lives at my parents house and they are away for a month so he is not under his usual 24 hour observation - as I am at work in the day time. i am staying at their house whilst they are away so can keep a close eye on him morning, night and weekends.

Its just so stressful having horses isnt it!

I will keep you all updated with progress.

Many thanks

Hi, that's good news, was just about to post on your other post to let you know I tried two boxes of treatment of gastrogard (hope that's the right name it's in paste form), I got it from the vet while I had a colic in an elderly horse. Just a thought!

Good news Gem, I forgot to say that my horse gets colic on and off and I have found giving him a little bran with his feed has helped him. Although having said that he did get another bout a couple of months ago but was soon up and about after the vet's visit. It's a constant worry for my fella especially when it rains, don't know why but he seems to get it worse when we have any heavy rain, so I try and keep him on very short grass.

Hope everything goes well.

My horse had an attack in Feb this year. It was horrible watching him suffer. The vet came out and tubed him i've never seen so much blood, it ran for nearly 2 hours. He hasn't had it again thank god. So glad yours is on the mend its very stressful for us and our horse.

Hi Again everyone, All is fine with my old chap tonight - have given him 1 more bute and have been advised by my vet to keep him on 1 morning and night for the next 3 days as the colic has lingered round for so long.

Fingers crossed I am in for a quiet night!

Take care

Gemsie, pleased your boy has improved this evening.

I have a horse who regularly colics without any obvious cause most times. One of the things my vets recently recommended trying was doing a gut tissue biopsy which apparantly can tell a lot of things ranging from minor to major. It is a relatively simple procedure, a pair of long stemmed pincers/tweezers are inserted in the bum and a bit of gut tissue is pinched off and sent off to the lab. My boys results showed that he had IBD but the tests will also detect things like worm damage through to serious issues such as tumours by the results that come through. Might be worthwhile chatting with your vet to see if they think such a test would help in your boy's situation.

Glad to hear he is looking better, colic is always such a worry as you just dont know whats going on in there.

Fynadine is an excellent drug, however it shouldnt be administered alongside bute, especially if ulcer's are suspected. The Coligone will certainly line the gut and neutralise any acidosis. The type of feed he is having could also have an impact if he has ulcers, nuts rather than mix will digest easier as they are cooked.

Hope your lad continues to improve, do let us know how he gets on.

Hi Babybells,

Nothing in his life has changed at all, I am extremely careful about keeping his daily routine and food intake the same after his previous colics.

Its such a mystery which I think is why im so stressed out about it,

He was due a wormer on Sat (it would have been 7 weeks since his last worming) but the vets have advised me to wait until this colic episode passes before giving him this - He has had bloods done for tapeworm which were negative - and I am a complete control freak about clearing his field of pooh every day and worming him every 7 weeks to the day (with a carefully devised worming programme which I drew up on a massive excel spreddie with the appropriate wormers for the time of year - I am OCD big time about this!)

I have called the clinic to ask if I should just give him this wormer (just in case) and am waiting for them to come back to me.

He is so odd because even when colicing - he is still super cheeky and has his full character. I have now seen pretty much every vet from my equine clinic and all are shocked by his character and condition not matching his colic symptoms...

I have seen global herbs do a product called gut buster - which relaxes the bowls in cases of gassy or spasmodic colic - I am tempted to try some of this but am concerned about overloading him with all these potions! He is having bute, and coligone - and his feed is a tiny amount of hi fi with blue chip light - and I have just introduced in the last couple of days pink powder as the vets have suggested this for the additional probitiocs....

I just want the best for my boy and for him to be pain free and enjoying his retirement to the max...its so upsetting when he is colicing - esp as he has not had anything like this in 20 years of owning him - bar the 3 episodes during the last 12 months....

Thanks - sorry its just a long waffley message

I have a 20yr old mare who has always been prone to spasmodic colic, when allowed to eat too much sugary grass in particular.
I manage her by restricting her grazing, feeding her hay/haylage, sugar beet helps, and I also give probiotics.
I feel I have to say to you, though, that it is not your fault your boy colics - sometimes these things just happen and no cause can be identified.
You can only do your best.

[/ QUOTE ]Hi if he has been worm counted and blood tested for tapeworms personally i would not worm for a little while i think the global herbs things are good and with them being herbs they are naturall so at least you know you are not pumping him full of chemicals. Good luck and hope he stays well!

Hi yes colicky for over a week. I've not had problems since but do have a spare box of it now just in case ! I'm sure it was two weeks worth of treatment with the gastrogard (omeprazole) paste, might have been longer - and the cost was around £200.
