Strange Sweating

Hi there. I was wondering if anyone might be able to suggest a reason why my new horse only sweats down one side of his face, predominantly around one ear. I first noticed this bringing him home in the lorry but put it down to the poll guard he was wearing. Any ideas? He's always been this way according to his last owner who had him since he was born (he bred him). I just think it seems a little strange.

It may be Anhidrosis vey rare ( as in almost unheard of) in the uk .
One of our horses has it only sweats on his ears and around the eyes, it's a problem as they can overheat when working with serious consequences.
Its diagnosed by injecting different concerntations of adrenalin into the skin and looking for a sweating reaction.
Google it .

He seems quite comfortable when he's working, he is in fact very fit and has never panted with me. He barely breaks a sweat and when he does it's only ever round his ear!!!

Just like ours thank god I am not alone.
Ours pulled himself up out hunting he had just done an eleven miles flat out and was cooked apart from that it's never affected him I am glad he is not required to work hard in summer though.
Theres lots on the Internet about it we are getting a supplement from the US which helps some I really think it depends on what level they are required to work at the size of the problem to the horse of course at first I thought mine was a deceptively fit horse and that why he never sweated it was only over time I realised something really strange was going on and we got the adrenalin test done.

Is there an underlying cause for the anhidrosis? My horses coat is shining like a new penny and always has done judging by the photo's. What is the name of the supplement? Can this not be due to thyroid probs? Thanks!

The supplement is called One AC they don't really know what causes it but it's seen a lot in horses that are moved from temperate areas to very hot ones that's why most of the imfo on it comes from the US.
It's extremely rare in the UK my vet has never seen it neither have the specialists she spoke with but he's got it the adrenalin test was very conclusive .
He is shedding too much calcium in his urine too so we will have to sort that out ,he was in the vets today for a muscle biopsy to see if that shows anything interesting.
There has been research looking for a link with thyroid probs but they don't know why it happens.
My horse has a lovely coat too the condition progresses and dry coatedness that makes the skin dandruffy and dull might come later.
I am just so relieved ours works in the winter as a hunter so I am hopeful we can manage it so he still has a good life.

I have a young mare who also sweats down one side of her face, started around her right ear then quickly progressed to the whole right side of her face was told that she had probably banged her head and caused nerve damage although there were no signs of injury, did some research myself and found that stress can be a factor, also at that time she had received an injury to her leg was pregnant and had to be boxed to Newmarket surgery so put mine down to stress, was told nerve damage causes slight paralysis so loss of control over sweat glands causes the sweating, she only sweats when climate changes fairly quickly so in the morning and when ridden.was told that it would not cause a problem with riding so not sure about over heating and any other problems?

If she cans sweat normally over the rest of her body it won't make any difference to her.
my horses does not sweat after galloping for eleven miles his ears where sweaty and a little around his eyes the rest of him was dry he was really really hot to the touch and blowing hard he was fine once he cooled off.
It's the weirdest thing to see.

Interesting update. I thought I'd try those equiwinner patches. Put one on today and an hour later during some schooling (light) he started to sweat! Under his girth, between his legs and under his numnah! I'm well impressed. According to past owners he has never ever sweated, other than around his ears

Now that's good news as I have a box here to try on ours but did not want to do this before he had been into the vets for his muscle biopsy .
Will start the patches on Monday fingers crossed it helps.

They look stupid as, but there's no denying they work and they work well. I want to know what's in them!!

Do not care that they look silly just praying it's an answer the boy goes hunting tomorrow so can get started after that .fingers and toes crossed.
