Today we found my mare with a really really weird wound on her back. It is 3 sides of a very straight square on her back - skin deep but very sharp. It is about 3 inches long and parallel to her spine on one side, 3 inches across and then not quite breaking the skin another 3 inches parallel to the first wound. It really is very straight and very right angles. We have walked her field and can't seem to find anything that could have caused it. Could it have been made by some weird minded horrible person!! It does remind me a bit of silence of the lambs. Any ideas? and how long do you think it will take to heal. It has penetrated the skin but not really beyond that. Rather disturbed

It sounds like a wound caused by running into a square metal bar breaking the skin on two sides but not the lowest side of the square. But if you don't have anything like that in your field then I don't know :/

On the yard we wondered if it was some bit of metal that had come off the agricultural machinery that goes over the field but just couldn't find anything that could have caused it :(

A friends elderly chap had a similar wound on his sole causing a huge abscess. That was caused by a broken (metal) post buried in the ground on the edge of the paddock, could there be something in the ground? Have you got a picture? x

I'm going to take one tomorrow cause it really is very odd - just on either side of her spine on the centre of her back and like someone had drawn it out with a ruler

Or even something that wasn't buried till she rolled on it, hence you not finding anything. A person doesn't make sense, to do a precise wound any horse would take some restraining, of which I'm sure the horse, if not the field, would be showing evidence of.

perhaps she was rolling in the field and came into contact with something burried in the ground of that description

A yard I was on brought in one of their horses one day to find her covered in what looked like slash marks. We went into panic mode as it really looked like someone had gone at her with a knife! It wasn't until one of the others came in with a similar mark the following day that we realised one of the young geldings had twisted one of his front teeth it was razor sharp on the edge and he had caused the wounds when playing with the others.

I know this is unlikely to repeat itself, just pointing out how these sort of things can be caused by something you wouldn't even imagine!

Hope your horse recovers quickly.
