Hi, in the process of buying a horse. Livery yard needs negative strangles test. Horse got 0.4 on one of the strains and 0.1 (negative on the other). Not having guttural pouch done. Has anyone experienced this before? Did your guttural pouch test come back negative or positive? ? Thanks

Quite often it does come back negative but there's no way of knowing if it will or not. My vet reckons the blood test isn't worth doing due to this and the horse should either be guttural pouch washed or isolated for at least 3 weeks when changing yards. There's a post in the Tack Room which includes my recent experience with strangles including a horse blood testing negative and then a week later swabbing positive.

just have the guttural pouch wash done, mine was higher and came back negative but i needed the GPW doing as needed an immediate (more or less, vet came same day results back in 24 hours) answer!
