I don’t know if I’m being dramatic but here goes...

we had a new horse come to our yard 2 weeks ago, however was returned 3 days later as wasn’t suitable for the family.
We have just been informed that this pony went through a vetting yesterday and has tested positive on a strangles blood test (or 0.7 reading).
This pony was stabled behind/ and in the next field to my horse.
I have had the vet come out and do a blood test on mine. Owner is blaming my horse saying it’s a carrier however said pony was out at arena hires /competing prior to it coming yet my mare hasn’t been competing or out our yard since September. Surely if mine was a carrier she would of infected some others by now ? I’m so stressed it been 10 days now and my mare isn’t showing any symptoms but also know they can carry with no symptoms. Just hoping she’s all clear ??

I wouldn't panic until you get the blood test results and even then you really don't need to panic.

3 years ago i was on a yard when a pony from a dealer brought strangles onto the yard. I was about to move yards so after an appropriate quarantine period both my horses were blood tested. My gelding had zero antibodies but my mare (who shared a field with him) had a really high score. So she had a guttural pouch wash with antibiotics. It was annoying and expensive but most horses - even those that get full blown strangles - bounce back.

Thankyou for that!

can I ask how much you ended up spending to get you mate right ? I’ve seen it costs a fortune !

Mine had a reaction to the antibiotics used for the pouch wash - weekend emergency call out and a lot of steroids!

Ignoring that I think it was about £400 ish - not actually covered by insurance given she didn't have strangles either. The gelding had to have 2 blood tests to confirm he hasn't had a delayed response so that wasn't cheap either.

I know with all the emergency stuff it hit £1.5k in less than a week. I moved yards as soon as I could.
