Hi!
I am a new horse owner and i am on a livery yard. It has been announced that two neighbouring yards have suspected cases of strangles (one is confirmed)
I am doing all i can to prevent my horse from getting it but i am struggling to ride.
In order to ride anywhere i have to pass the entrance of one of the yards. One of the entrances is very close however the other is a lane thats around half a mile long with the yard at the end of it.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to do or whether its worth not riding at all? Any advice would be really useful!

Strangles isn't airborne so riding past the yards isn't a risk. Just don't let you horse have contact with the horses from the affected yards and make sure people don't come from those yards to your's without disinfecting first. You could have a tub if disinfectant at your entrance but, if you do make sure it's changed frequently or it's useless.

Don't panic. We had strangles twice at the one yard. It was an inconvenience at the time and we weren't allowed to hack out.

Like HC says don't let them touch.

If your horse runs a temperature of 38.5 plus and looks depressed or is struggling to eat then it could have developed it. Most horses suffering from strangles just need good quality nursing, including rest and anti-inflammatories. Feed hay and hard feed on the floor to encourage drainage and try not to panic, it is rarely fatal, although there can be complications in about 20% of horses.

Let the farrier, vet, etc know before they visit the yard that there maybe strangles on your yard as they will probably make you last visit of the day to avoid spreading the disease. Wash your clothes in a hot wash and use a disinfection foot bath at the gate of the yard. People moving from horse to horse should remove their outer clothing and wash their hands.
