hi a yard 1 mile from my yard has comfirmed strangles, they have no signs on gates and still have horses turned out in fields that are along side the road, it is a very horsey area?is there anything they should be doing?? it just seemed so selfish??

Just don't ride past the yard. There's no reason why your horse should catch it providing you don't come in to direct contact with a horse that has it.

Hopefully the yard in question is quarantining - and preventing others from riding off the yard.

But we had a similar situation last year with a yard near to me - and it didn't spread.

I have never known any yard with strangles to put a sign on the gate.

No horses should be entering or leaving the yard but apart from that they do not have to do anything or tell anyone. Yes it is polite to tell other yards but unfortunatly this does not very often happen.

Just make sure you do not hack past the yard its is on or touch any of their horses, apart from that there isnt much you can do. You or your horse need direct contact with an infected horse to pass it on so dont worry too much. And it IS NOT airbourne.

My horse has strangles at the moment, and he developed a very serious complication, he has been very very ill. All the yards in our area know we have it on our yard, however we did not put up notices or go round telling all the yards individually, we are a private livery yard so no other horses come on anyway. Have a browse through my recent posts and you will find loads of info on strangles, along with my replies to other questions on strangles.

If you need to know anything else feel free to PM me.

as long as they quarentine themselves you will be fine there was a vacc not sure if it is still avaliable, we were on a yard and a yard that backed onto ours had it twice!! its not airborne and they are only contageous when they are snotty and the puss comes just stay well clear!!
