Thanks to the stupidity of some people there are now 3 yards in the neath/Port Talbot maybe Swansea area who have strangles.
One yard has been kicking off horses with strangles and its now spreading :rolleyes:...can people please quarantine the horses with it and not allow any new horses on yards.... If people would just admit their yard has it, would make things alot easier. It`s not a big deal and once contained and treated thngs revert to normal (in most cases)
There have been reports of horses from confirmed yards competing etc....
Apologies to those who this dosnt concern.

Agree with you. Not in the same area as you but a similar thing happen in my area last summer, we ended up missing the whole of the summer and not being aloud to leave the yard. Kept spreading yard as we knew of people who were still hacking in the early hours, going straight from out yard without changing and to a friends yard etc.
Such a horrible disease and so hard to contain anyway.
Fingers crossed everything clears up as quickly as possible.

We have it here too.

I am incredibly fussy, apart from my Boarders I have youngstock and broodmares here, the last thing I need is to nurse sick horses with winter looming.

I had prospective Boarders come down yesterday, when I said that their horses would have to go into isolation (normal, I always do it) they said they'd go elsewhere, that their horses had had the vaccine, so? Hypocrites, if the shoe was on the other foot and it was their horse that caught something from an incomer....

Fine by me, who needs clients like that anyway?

OP. Hope it gets cleared up down there for you.

i've known people that have gone on fun rides and competitions when there has been strangles on their yard. when i asked them about doing it they said they weren't going to lose their entry money because their horse may or may not have it.

it's stupid and selfish in my opinion as it spreads so easily and will linger for a long time. i'd rather be stuck on the yard for 6 months than risk my horse catching it or passing it on to another horse.

Finding it really annoying that YO`s are kicking off horses that have it...
There was a case back in March but the yard informed people and put signs on all their gates etc telling people not to visit etc....
People seem to be ashamed of it for some reason and they have no need to be :(.....

please correct me if i am wrong ,but shouldnt the vet who diagnosed strangles notify the ministry and shut the yard down ? or have things changed ?
chris

I`ve spoken to 3 vets today and none will confirm cases yet 3 yards are known to have it for definately as one yard has informed people they have it and liveries from that yard moved willingly to a new yard so they could compete ....it just goes on and on

I had this exact argument the other day!!! :( i am in pontardawe and was also told people are still leaving yards with strangles :( the YO in my opinion is disgraceful. My 'lodgers' know that my yard at the minute is isolated so to speak, no competing locally allowed as i am on top of the mountain and do not get visitors and im keeping it that way!!!!!!

I have also stopped any visiting of other yards, lodgers mum has ponies as well and i have told them both that they are not to visit either yards without going home, showering, clean cloths, spray shoes etc..... luckily for me they are very greatful as we share the same views on this anyway.

people really do annoy me, STOP BEING SELFISH AND THINK ABOUT THE HORSES FOR ONCE !!!!!!!! GRRRRRRRR :(

hi ayla84, i am in this area too and find it quite alarming how some people are reacting to the outbreak, even though its not on our yard and we are quite far away from the ones who are infected, our y.o has put out disenfectant for boots and hands as a precaution and asked us to change clothes before we come to the yard if we've visited tack shops etc. so there are some sensible people about. i've only heard of two yards in the area that have strangles though, and dont want to put names on here, but could you possibly pm me with the names of the ones you've heard of? just to be sure no-one i know has contact with people from those yards without being aware, thanks

Cobiau so glad your YO is taking good steps, I'm putting disinfectant on the driveway tomorrow, I know I.am going over board as I live in the middle of no where but if it helps stop it spreading :)

aregona, good on you - i dont think you're going over board at all, even if you live in the middle of nowhere you can never be sure that you havent come in contact with someone whose yard or horses are infected and if everyone took the same steps then it wouldnt be able to spread as easily, better safe than sorry after all

Have Pm`d people with the info of who and where....

let me know if anyone else wants any info....I rang quite a few vets yesterday and pretty much all receptionists got very shirty with me and wouldnt let me know if there was any new confirmed cases

I done a Le Trec about 16 years ago and my pony came back with strangles which then turned in to ******* strangles! Out of all the people who competed I was the only one who apparentely caught it (which I doubt) I was just honest enough to inform everyone and keep my pony in isolation for a very long period of time!

I believe honesty is the best policy and to lie low for a while is the easiest option. No pre-caution is silly either. I hope that it can be contained now and YO's stop letting new horses on to thier yards with out checking where the new livery has come from.

You need to inform Trading Standards (and probably Environmental Health). Because whilst Strangles is not a notifiable disease Trading Standards will take a very dim view of yards throwing off horses that have it. They should also issue guidelines on how the yards should be dealing with the outbreaks.

All Livery yards have to be be inspected and certified by Trading Standards, and they should act on your report.

Sorry AM there is no requirement for livery yard inspection only riding schools

ANYONE can set up a livery yard!

There is here in South Wales, Cuffey.

Every single one in my immediate area has been inspected. And the surrounding areas were imminent.

Every horse was checked along with it's passport. Welfare checks made, facillities and insurances inspected.

This is the one yard I dont know who it is....a girl on Facebook has admitted to having her horses thrown off though.... Plus a lot of yards dont operate as a business :( would trading standards still be able to something? Some LIVERY yards are falling down stable son an acre of land, nothing remotley worthy of keeping horses.
Shall do some digging?

Didnt know you was a fellow South Walian :P:p:D

sorry to disagree amymay, i'm in south wales not far from swansea and in this area i think it IS the case that anyone can set up a livery yard, i only wish there were proper guidelines put in place regarding the running of such places and welfare of their 'residents' as i can tell you its a sad fact but there are some seriously dodgy livery yards around here!:(

Yes, anyone can set up a Livery Yard. The minute it is registered as a LY business it will come under the scrutiny of TS (at least eventually).

Either way, it's semantics. OP Get on to them.
