I've seen a few threads about this already, but I think my situation may be a little unique. So, about two weeks ago we brought home a standardbred from our trainer's farm. She was skinny, and looked like she had an infection in her bag. Well, the tests came back b****** strangles, and we had to send her back for fear of getting our other two horses sick. Well, the owner said that he would sell her back to us after she was healed up, and I got to ride her yesterday, and she's fantastic! There's no signs of the sore, of the strangles at all. But our vet has said that there's a chance of her being a permanent carrier because she went a few weeks with it without it being treated. (the owner had left her out in a field and not paid attention to her for a month) One of our horses already got the strangles, and we're praying the other doesn't, she's old and my mother-in-law's favorite. I want to bring the standardbred back home (we have two barns) but she has to pass the blood test/ swab test first.
My question is, is there a time when the swab test or blood test will distinguish her just getting over the strangles or if she is a permanent carrier? I want her back here so bad
it killed me to have to send her back the first time.
