Strangles Scenario

Two weeks ago I moved my daughter's pony to the yard next door. I am on grazing only livery and as I want to sell him though I would take him to the yard next door for a week and return after that on a day basis for viewings should he not sell in the first week.
The day after I arrived I was concerned by a lot of whinnying coming from a stable that had both the top and bottom doors shut. I peeped through the crack through the door and then to confirm my suspicions opened the top door and found a pony with what was obviously strangles ( I have seen it twice before). 3 more boxes revealed the same thing. I was furious and told the girls who run the place so. How dare they allow me onto the yard, rent me a stable and offer to do me a deal if I bring my other two knowing all along they have strangles?!
A week later my pony has contracted what I think its safe to assume is strangles (no abscesses so far) and I have to date an £85 vets bill. Do I have a good case to pass it (the bill) onto the girls I've rented the stable from?
 
I would have a word with a soliciter regarding making a claim, it's disgusting exposing your animal)s to this situation, no wonder you were furious.
 
I would be fuming too - and isn't strangles a notifiable disease so if they have to notify authorities/yards in the area then they have a duty of care to advise any new customers too!

I would talk to a solicitor to see where you stand

oo - my mistake. I thought most vets notify other vets/yards etc and this was compulsory.

Even so - I think you have a case. You could try the BHS for advice or maybe citizen's advice if you don't want to go for a solicitor?
 
You got me thinking Arwen so have just had a double check on defra's website, its not listed, wish it was!
Had a lookie on citizens advice website to (good thinking thanks) re paying a solicitor.
It makes me so mad, I have been changing and washing my clothes twice a day so I can see to my other two, daren't take my children with me as I can't be scrubbing them down too (not to mention the littlie's pushchair), I#ve had to muck out andevery day (not a big thing obviously but I'm on grass livery because mucking out isn't on my agenda at the moment), have lost my horsemart advertising fee and am forking out for a pony who I hoped would be gone by now or at least soon. Stress over
 
Strangle isnt a notifiable disease. Nor is it as serious as alot of people make out except in exceptional circumstances. It is also only passed on through contact. Has is definitely been confirmed your horse has strangles and not a secondary infection?I have known cases of horses on strangles yards getting similar symptons, but swabbing clear of strangles.

Unfortuantely I dnt think you have a case regarding claiming, unless you an prove the infection was already known about when you moved yards, and you horse has contracted it through negligence on the behalf of the YO.

We had a similar cae where a lady moved her horse onto our yard with an "infection which had been cleared by the vet. 5 days leater when it still had discharge pouring out of its nostrils, it turned out to be strangles. 4 other horses got it and were subject to large vets bills, unfortuately the owners of each horse was liable for the costs as there was never any "proof" of negligence even though a vet had cleared it.
 
That was my worry KatB. The only way of knowing for sure is if their vet was treating theirs before I arrived.
Its not a lot of money I know that but I'm the person that gets walked all over because I'm too nice to do otherwise and I'm getting rather fed up of it. I'm particularly cross in this case as they have also sold a horse from there that had a snotty nose at the time, it has tested positive for strangles in its new home. The new yard is in uproar.
It's all so irresponsible, I would just like them to realise how silly they've been.
I will sleep on it. Again!
