STRANGLES! The ignorance of some people!!!

The yard i kept my horses at has had strangles since February, theres 30 odd horses on the yard and all but around 8 had symptoms, nasal discharge, abcesses, high temperature etc.

Now everyone on the yard has just gone back to normal, NOONE has swabbed, flushed or anything and they are all hacking out, and have shows lined up!

Why on earth is this all allowed to happen?? Is there seriously noone that can be notified or any organisation they can be reported to?

This all makes me so angry!
 
OMG that is appalling behaviour. Last time we had strangles outbreaks in the local area (not on our yard) our YO locked down the yard - no horses allowed off or on, only owners allowed on the yard and a sanitisation regime was put in place. Has a vet been involved? Could they have strong words? Is YO/YM not bothered?

Strangles is not a notifiable disease in the UK so there is no legal requirement to report it.

Is your horse not at the yard anymore?

I'd be tempted to have a word with the local vets in the area - let them spread the word and advise what should be done (they will also spread the word to other yards of the outbreak) and then let the angry mob of other YO/YM horse owners tell this bunch of ignorant ****s to act now or it will (not could) cause a serious outbreak.

Can you advise where the yard is please?
 
what is the timescale for stangles? a Local yard to me had it at the end of the winter (March/april time) with 3 horses contracting stangles. but they were out at a show on sunday with one of the horses. they have apparantly been given the all clear but i thought that swabs were needed for this to happen? (no swabs etc have been taken they are going purely on timescale?)

should is still be worried about my horses catching it?
 
I would like to know what area this yard is in too, as a yard fairly close to me had strangles earlier in the year and I'm due to go to a show on Sunday. Won't be going if the yard you are talking about is in my area!
 
The yard is in Kent.

The vets are aware but the liveries and YO have chosen to ignore them!

They are also taking on new liveries saying that they have been given the "all clear" but no swabs or flushes have been taken to prove they are clear of it!

Our horses were swabbed and needed more flushing to clear them so the YO rudely chucked us off the yard because we had shown that the strangles was still there and we were delaying him opening up his yard again!!!!
 
He shouldn't have made you leave if your horses were still infected...what a ******.

I was on a yard with strangles several years ago...we went into 'lockdown'....there were foot-trays of virkon everywhere, we were all practising 'barrier' nursing. If I smell disinfectant now I [ractically have a flash-back:p ALL horses on the yard had to be swabbed 3 times before the vets would allow us to be back to normal. ( blimmin expensive it was)

The YO gave 2 people notice...for different reasons.....but they were told they could only leave the yard when their horses were swabbed clear as it wasn't fair or ethical to send them to infect another yard.

Some people need a good slapping:eek:
 
The outbreak was 6 months ago? Its probably safe to say the outbreak has been contained by now and the horses should be clear. It sounds like you are a bit put out that you were asked to leave so now you maybe want to try to damage the mans business?
 
There is still a horse on the yard with ******* Strangles, and others with nasal discharge and coughing.

Nothing on that yard has been swabbed and any number of horses on that yard could be carriers. Horses can hold condroids (or however u spell it) in their guttural pouches for years!

I am certainly not trying to ruin his busness, but i am concerned about the irresponsible owners of the horses on the yard, and the fact they just cant be bothered to have a swab and make sure their horse isnt still infected, and have instead chosen to ignore the fact its possible and carry on business as usual.
 
In your first post you said the horses *had* strangles and symptoms. You did not say some horses still had it. How many horses still have strangles at this yard? Are they quarantined? If he is showing new customers round are they not seeing the horses with strangles?

You cannot assume that. It went on for months at the yard we were on.....there is an incubation period, so as we were thinking that all the affected horses were getting better...another one would show symptoms.

Unfortunately its not a notifiable disease !

I do believe that yard managers/owners have a responsibility AND OWNERS

We had it on my yard few years back, we were locked down by our YM, dips foot washes etc,

It was managed perfectly as we only had 1 horse with it !

We all had our horses blood tested THE WHOLE YARD !

Few of them were swabbed came back negative so just the 1 horse had it THANK GOD

Mine is 31 and had had it over 20 years ago, I know because I knew him then but didn't own him, my pony at the time didnt' get it but most of the yard I was on did.

It is UNBELIEVABLE that people would ride out and risk passing it on and organise shows etc

From what happened on my yard, I believe you are only safe after the last effected horse has had 2 clear swabs

And what yard would accept someone who was coming off a yard with it, or didn't you tell them ?

StrepE cant survive for longer than a couple of months out of the host body. Unless B*** strangles was a complication or you had a silent shedder on your yard then 6 months should see no horses having strangles providing correct quarantine procedure has been followed.
 
A lot of horses dont get the full blown symptoms of strangles. They might just get a slight cold or nothing at all, but because its passed to those that might get the full symptoms they should not move their horses off the yard. I know my friend and just moved her horse to her new house, when she found her horse had strangles. She informed the owner of the yard she was at who told her not to be so stupid and that he didnt get strangles from her yard. She was a dealer and my friends horse had been there for 15 years. There was no concern or lock down and she did pony club camps there as well. Idiot.
 
My experiance of strangles is mass hysteria

Yes it is a horrible desease and my full sympathys go to anyone whose horse suffers it, however it is not as infectious as some will believe. It is also far more common than people realise most areas have a case somewhere you just do not get to hear about it as it is not notifiyable and tends not to be good for buisness.

The bottom line is you cannot catch it in the wind, to catch it your horse has to come in direct contact with the virus, e.g drinking out of water an infected horse has drunk from, touching noses with an infected horse, touching an area that an infected horse has very recently touched.

So anyone worried about taking their horse to shows because of horses from a yard that was certainly infected in febuary and may or may not be now, you can still go and the show will not be any more risky than it usually is ( and remember there is nearly always strangles around ) just take precautions as you usually should e.g bring your own water, buckets, tie your horse to your box, and never let it sniff noses with a horse from a diffferent yard.
 
no the horses cannot catch it unless they come into contact with it physically but your horse grazes on the show ground, another horse comes out of the ring and grazes where your horse had just grazed. It can pass quite easily.

Agree however the infected horse has to have grazed recently.
Not letting your horse graze on the showground is another precaution you should always take.
Remember strangles is always about, so always be careful but with sensible precautions your horse should be safe at partys!
