Strangles, they dont give a F*CK!

Ithink one of our yard ladys put a post up last week regarding strangles at the yard next to me {same land with 2 yards}

Well today one of the mares on our yard has gone down with it, the owner has put a wire grid up over her door and taken no chances, BUT on the side that have 5 horses strangles. They had A GO at me saying that its all our falt and we are not alowed to go near thear yard {white line} The thing is we havent and dont go near thear yard its the outher way round!

This has made me totaly mad at them, blaming US. When they have had it since boxing day with out telling anyone

It is just shear ignorance on thear side.

Now that we have 1 mare with it all hell has opened.

They cant see that they have 5 horses what are very ill.

I also got shouted at as i had my dog with me - "you know DOGS can spread it too" - um yes thats why he is eather in my lorry or "with me" - aparntley {sp} they didant know till tues that dogs caould spread it, sorry but DHO do you really need a brain to work that out? I can under stand if you are totaly new to horses but these people should darn well know. The fact is thear at least 5 dogs are always coming on our yard and pooping and nicking feed this is on a day to day thing.

Actually it's not airbourne. It is is carried in the snot and mucus so only becomes airbourne if you are in line of fire during a sneeze. It can however be easily carried on footwer, clothing and as the original poster says by dogs as the snot/mucas can easily stick to anything.

Burtie is right - the only way strangles can be "airbourne" is if the snot floats away on the wind. Strangles is a direct-contact condition; the snot must be touched by a person/object/item of clothing, for it to be transferred.
