Why is it so embarassing for a yard to get strangles? Why is it so hush hush? Dont tell anyone...Surely it would be much better to say we have a strangles outbreak keep clear? It is no-ones fault surely? But it would give some protection to others.

ETA My horses havent got it -yet! That would probably finish me off!!

i dont know why its like that maybe because people think that the horses got it from the yard being untidy and dirty dont know i'd rather be told myself.

Exactly how I feel. Same with Flu really. It is much better for people to know so if their horses show symptoms they are ready for them.

I think a lot of yards keep it quiet because so many people start to panic when they hear the S word. Often they blow it all out of proportion, generally due to ignorance of the condition, and, certainly in the past, it has been the ruin of some yards. Sadly it is because of these ignorant gossip-mongers, that I feel so many yards don't want to tell others that they have it for fear of it spreading and them getting the blame, even if they have followed all the guidelines to the letter.

I feel really sorry for anyone getting it and it means staying put for quite a while .I think that is why there is a stigma ,people try to keep it quiet so they can start going to shows before they should.

We found out last week that there has been an outbreak close to us, since December. It has been kept quiet, but it seems stupid to me that they have kept it quiet. I think some of the people on that yard have been to some of our riding club events!!! :O
