to use for this - either you can travel back in time and plait your own 'wisp' out of straw, or you can buy a sheepskin pad to use.
Once you have groomed the horse as normal, you pick the muscle you want to develop, and then you bang the sheepskin pad down on it - not so hard you hurt, but not as gently as a pat. The key point is that it has to be in a set rhythm of equal time intervals. The horse will start to anticipate the next 'bang' and will tense his muscle in preparation. It is this tension and release which promotes blood flow, stimulates the muscle, and hence builds them up.
Another gem from my font of useless knowledge.

Forgot to say, I worked on a stud which used a different method of 'strapping' involving a rubber curry comb.
They would scrape it along the muscle, like a massage, not necessarily in any rhythm. I think the idea was that the massage element would develop muscle.
I wasn't convinced by this version though.

If u decide to try it on the neck area don't do it on a nervous horse. Stupid stage 2 examiner asked me to demonstrate I could do it and horse went mental coz it was a rescue and had been badly treated...

Wow its great to hear the good old methods are coming back into practice, I usually strap Ralph if he's had a good work out to loosen him up, he loooooves it

Strapping is great but our physio just advised not to leave the horse standing in afterwards. Either do it before exercise or just afterwards but always before turnout as you really get the circulation going if done properly
