Just a quick question, my boy has been on straw since forever and with winter coming up someone at the yard mentioned how they had ordered in their pallet of shavings.
Anyway it got me thinking is shavings better than straw?
Do you find you can still get a nice thick bed with shavings?

I've currently found a deal where it works out £4 for a bag of shavings
Where as I pay £1.50 for a big bag of straw(the ones builders use for bricks)

Anyone have any suggestions which I'd be better off using?
Thanks in advance

I am horrifically biased because I use straw . . . but STRAW. It's cheaper and warmer. I have the dirtiest most restless horse on the planet and I spend far less (in time and money) on his straw bed then I ever did when he was on shavings.

You CAN build a nice deep bed with shavings, but if your horse is a restless, box-walking, poo machine like mine it just isn't cost effective.

I have switched to straw from shavings and wouldn't go back tbh. Much easier to manage, and I'm really fussy about beds, lol!

My mare is so wet that I used shavings under a huge straw bed - it cost me a fortune! Although I love straw beds, I now use Bliss rape straw which compacts all the wet and I only dig out once a week. Obviously, all poo is skipped out on a daily basis. I have rubber mats btw.

i use shavings - straw stinks and takes ages to muck out......... and then my hair stinks after mucking out straw.....

i use a bale a week on shavings which is in with my rent anyhow :D
