I have a really dirty mare (never known anything like it) who has thrush in her back feet. Now obviously we are treating the thrush but I cant imagine its doing her any good to be standing on dirty shavings all night (she has half a bag of clean every evening!).

Now my question is- do you think being on a straw bed will help the thrush as it wont get all compacted into her feet?

Thanks

I've had horses on straw for years and they always had compacted sh!t in their feet in the morning. A little bit of flax and rubber matting would be my chioce. My 2 are buggers for getitng thrush and they've been on medium sized flax beds (with no matting, would like the beds to be bigger but they're messy) and they've been fine.

It doesn't matter what bedding up have, just make sure all your bedding is dry. Does your stable have rubber matting, if you it might be better. How do you treat your horses thrush? You could use peroxcid or NAF Hoof and sole

My girl used to have terrible thrush but she was on semi-deep littered shavings (yard I was on would only let us use that) and when I moved her and changed to straw the difference was almost instant. I used to treat the thrush with duphacyclin (sp) spray from the vet and peroxide which helped.
