So at 12.15am this morning, i got a call from my little brother... (well he's not really little at 5'10" and 24 years old...)

'I've found a dog, can you help?'

So off i trundle to my mums house (literally just a 2 second walk - they're next door) and find a very friendly little black & white dog, looks to be a staffy/lab cross I think, very friendly, calm, in relatively good condition although obviously hasnt eaten for a few days.

Brother found him and another dog while walking back from his mates house, the other dog ran off and was barking & growling at them - wouldnt go near him, the dog he brought home literally jumped into his arms! no collar etc. We gave him a small bowl of my dogs skinners dog food - which he wolfed down, and he was very thirsty too. made him a little bed up in my brothers room, and he lay down and went to sleep - and by all accounts didnt make a peep all night. he has a limp, but dont think its anything serious.

Dog warden has been callled, but my brother is devistated, and keeps saying if he hasnt been claimed after the 7 days whats going to happen to him (which i cant answer... as i dont know) - my Mum has said absoluely not when asked if he can adopt him (if he isnt claimed etc), he'd be totally impractical, and I cant have him, as have no idea how he is with other dogs, plus he's entire (which i know could be sorted) just dont have room for a third dog really... feel so sorry for the little lad, he is just lovely I mean really really lovely... am tempted to see if my landlord would accept another dog, and see if i can 'foster' him (assuming he's ok with other dogs and gets 'done' etc.) but just dont know if a 3rd dog is the right thing to do... just feel so bad for him.

here he is - if anyone in the North West Leicestershire area recognises him, 'nicknamed' by my brother as 'Teddy':

and if anyone has any 'advice' on this kind of thing... what generally happens after the 7 day 'claiming' period etc. good or bad,

Reg him on dog lost website, regarding the 7 days it all depends on your area and how full they are I know of kennels that will do anything they can to find a home and sadly a few that do pts once the days are up as they don't have room.

As long as the dog warden knows he is with you it's fine, but be aware even after x amount of weeks/months if someone came forward (enquired to the dog warden) they will have your details to get him back (obs they may be genuine) or may not be.
To me...if you lose a dog you make an effort to find it, call the dog warden, look on dog lost, search/make posts on facebook.
I personally never show pictures of dogs, I give a slight description and let the people describe the dog to me, to many people can claim a dog that is not theirs.

Ps, if you really wanted to give it a try, most dog warden give neutering vouchers, but you may have to the pay a dog warden fee which is usally very low £40 here:( but atleast that way you took him through the authority, If they dont then stipulate another 7 day stay in the pound (which would not be nice) for him.
He looks cure as:) well done for offering shelter, I can see how your brother likes him. Maybe keeping him and rehoming if you cannot find an owner and chipping in to vax and neuter?

Well the warden collected him earlier, I did a bit of googling, looks like the kennels they go to for their 'statutory 7 days' after which, assuming there are no serious health issues/behaviour issues they go up for re-homing. So we've decided to let him go as have no doubt he'll find a home, he's everso cute, relatively young and just a lovely little person!

My poor little bro is still upset, but my two doggy reprobates are cheering him up. Will be keeping an eye on the kennels rehoming page though... Can't help myself!

Don't assume he will automatically find a home. It's unusual for kennels to rehome straight to the public so I would double check. Having just been part of a massive push to get a perfectly sweet 7 month Staffie cross into rescue as was due to be PTS, i have to say that being a young dog does not save them. I would question the dog warden as to exactly what the policy is, and plan accordingly. Also what happened to the other dog? Did the warden manage to get that one too?

Rescues are stuffed to overflowing with Staffie types and crosses and it is not a few that are PTS, it's a lot. Figures I have seen seem to suggest up to 70 Staffie types a day are PTS and they are mostly young dogs. Not badly behaved or problems, simply unwanted, so please do keep a close eye on your new friend..

I've done the research and this kennels does seem to attempt to rehome when possible. I realise its not a guarantee, but we don't really have any choice here, my mum doesn't want a dog, she has a cat, and works 9-5, my brother is off to uni in September and I have a tiny house and two dogs. I really don't think he'll have a problem finding a home (assuming his limp isn't serious and he has no behavioural issues), he also doesn't look 'staffyish' so think that will go in his favour. Would love to offer him a home, but can't, and really don't want to think of him being PTS. Im afraid theres not a lot I can do any further then we already have to help him.

Out of curiosity has he gone to College Garth Kennels? He looks a good sort and I'd be surprised if he didn't find a home quite quickly as he's young a nice size and as you said he doesn't look staffyish (sorry staffies).
Hopefully your see a nice reserved note coming up soon for him.
