Anyone experienced dealing with stray dogs out of hours- what the process is, who you contacted and who you had success with getting tot ake the dogs or did you have to keep them until the dog warden was open?
Usually you have to hang on, in some areas (mine) you can call the dog warden at stupid o clock and she will run them to the pound, she does get a set fee for each dogs she collects so not sure if thats why, generally unless injured you are asked to hang onto them till normal working hours.
Yes picked up a HUGE American Bulldog that was stray on a Country lane on a Friday evening. Got home rang the Police, nothing to do with them - RSPCA the same. Rang the Council, who said they'd contact the Dog warden, heard nothing, so an hour later rang back to be told the Dog Warden's phone was off but she left a voicemail - probably gone for the weekend ring back Monday!!
I said no bloody chance, I'm not a charity and this dog is too big for my house - anyway got a call a little while later from dog warden to say either keep the dog til Monday or she can give me a number of a place that will hold him til Monday and it was an hour and a half round trip, and I didn't get home til gone 10pm. Then on the Monday got a stroppy call from the dogs owner to say I should pay to get the dog released, and it was out on his land (total lie, I know the land owner and the dog was on the public highway anyway) he was a right knob job.
Felt totally deflated, would not be confident in dog wardens etc if one of mine went missing - thank God for good honest, kind folk, but makes you hope you dont come across another one!!
I rang the local vets to the microchip checked before calling the warden. Was less than impressed with the 2 very local vets to where I was who were not interested at all. I ended up callng my equine vet who was much furter away and they wee more than happy for me to pop over with the dog to check her. Thankfully she was microhipped and returned to her owner within an hour.
Still dont get why people don't put collars on their dogs!! This little one apparently strays all the time, but never wears a collar.
My vet (two minute walk away from the house) will happily take strays, they scan for chips and reunite themselves if they can or else phone the dog warden and hold the dog until the warden arrives (or call me back to take the dog for the 28 days or whatever it is, they know I wouldn't let one go with the warden, esp. staffie types )
Luckily that's never happened, every one I've found so far has been chipped and swiftly reunited.
There a 24 hour Medivet around here that has a contract with the council to hold strays OOHs until the dog warden takes them to the pound. They like you to ring the emergency line at the council before you take them there but I have gone straight there when I've picked a dog off the main road at 5am.
I have been asked to hold them until office hours before but since I work that really doesn't work.
Horseylad.
I got a Thank you card, flowers and wine from the owners of a dog that had let herself out of the house overnight - they had seen my address on the paperwork
I agree though that tags make life very easy and chips are essential!
Depends on the area/who's working. My OH happily pops strays into the police kennels and will ensure they're walked, fed, have water, but not of all his colleagues are so co-operative.
