Does anyone have any knowledge of a horse that injured itself and had a stress fracture? If so, how long was the animal on box rst, how long did it take to get back into work, was it a slow process and did it reoccur?? Many thanks

My horse had a stress fracture from galloping around the field and an incompetant person at the yard. Anyway, it took 4-6 weeks for him to become sound and he was on box rest for 4 weeks.

X-rays did not show a fracture, but he had all the signs of a stress fracture. He was on 3 legs and could not weight bear on that leg.

PS, not all fractures are seen on x-rays. I work in a hospital orthopaedic department and sometimes the fracture shows up after 2 weeks and sometimes not.

My 6 year old TB event mare was diagnosed with a mild stress fracture of the cannon bone, she had a bone scan and an x-ray to confirm it, they recommended 8-10 weeks box rest, she is nearly up to 10 weeks and will be re-scanned very soon, Im sure she banged herself in the lorry as she came out hobbling on 3 legs on easter monday and was fine when I put her in, vets said all they can really recommend is rest, I have turned her out in a very small grass pen for a few hours a day to keep her sane! I also have an electro-pulsating rug which is meant to help heal things like this and she has a session each day, She looks sound to me now but will get her checked by the vet before riding her, she was very fit (done her first two events) before this happened, all being well I will walk her for 3-4 weeks before starting trot work again. Im hoping it wont re-occur! Good luck!
