At 10am I received the call no owner ever wants to receive....."I don't want to scare you but can you come over as soon as possible please"
Turns out Vardi managed to cast himself last night and to make it worse got his near hind hoof through the bars on the divider of his stable and the one next door.
Trainer checked him as normal at 11.30 last night and gave night time hay all was well......when she went out at 7am this morning Vardi was laying stuck fast, laying on his back with his near hind stuck through the bars of the divider exhausted on the floor of his stable.
She called the vet immediatley, then some friends to come help get him out and up.....it took 5 of them to get him loose and they had to take down the side panel of the stable to do so.....thank god this is a cool horse we have been so so lucky...
He has a swollen eye that looks like he has gone 5 rounds with Tyson, due to him scraping his head along the floor struggling to get up, his ear is cut and very very brused, he has some very superficial cuts and scrapes but the miracle is his leg.....he is horribly lame, there is a little swelling in his fetlock but he is bearing weight on it and walking......vet thinks we have got away with pulled muscles.....but we have been told to cold hose hourly for the next 24 hours, if there is major swelling or he stops putting any wieght on it he will have to go for x rays.......please send vibes that it is only only muscles and there is no tendon injury!
We have just come away....he is bless him full of pain meds and muslce relaxants so has the demeanour of a punch drunk boxer which is fitting for the wonder ful eye injury. But is eating, walking about the paddock (we are keeping him out 24hours now so he can walk about and not stiffen or stock up). Poohing (great relief as I was terrified that the shock would induce a colic) and has had his first pee!
Horrible scary day but just so grateful that he is a cool guy who obviously struggled for a while then though "bugger it someone will save me eventually" trainer is mortified but I have told her is it no way her fault.....its horses it happens. She is having a blood run cold moment and says that if it had been any other horse in the stable they would have panicked and struggled and in all probability broken their leg.....
He is now on a months field rest.......I think he must have heard me booking the transport to move him to his permenant yard next week!
