My 5 YO has had back, tack and teeth checked and has been turned away for the summer after being backed and ridden away from summer 2006 to spring 2007. We brought her back into work at the start of september and she was brillinat however the teenage devil horns and confidence have now started to appear and with it (or maybe the reason for it!!) she has become quite fizzy/stressy and is very hormonal with it, and is quite grump about having things like her girth tightened and her sides about level with her ovaries brushed/patted.

She has had her back, teeth and tack checked and the vet has seen her and said she is in perfect health and that its not unusual for youngsters hormones to bounce around a bit just like with humans but maybe to try a hormone supplement??

My instructor has also suggested a calmer just to take the edge off things and help keep her quieter and calmer in general until we have made a little more progress as slowly the deckings are knocking me confidence - she doesn't do anything particularly nasty but "just for the hell of it" or because "she does feel like doing something" she will throw a strop with various forms of pogo-ing and half the time I end up on the floor. That said she only ever does it in the school, rarely does something bother her out hacking!!

Any ideas? Would you try a calmer and if so what? Or a hormonal supplement or both??

My mare was quite spooky and stressy so I put her on the Equivite Calmer, this helped her a lot. But not all calmers will suit all horses. Perhaps try a hormonal supplement too, like Oestress *spelling.
