How do you encourage your horse to take a long one rather than getting in under the jump when going xc? D likes to practically touch the jump before taking off.

well ideally you want a medium ground- you don't want a 'long' one or a 'deep' one

how forward/ responsive is your horse to your leg? you need it to be listening so that when you see your stride they go when you say....but your hand also needs to supporting them (without interfering just before the fence)

You could try some grid work with ground poles slightly in front of the jump and ride forwards to the fences - this could encourage him to build up confidence with taking off further away?

Are you cantering in very slowly/ on a short stride? This can encourage horses to get too close so you should try to ride more forwards. Incidentally, it's much better to get in too close than to take off too far as it makes a horse work harder and make a better shape
