I'm riding a horse at the moment and I've just noticed that his hind offside hoof is covered in little dents, starting about 1-1.5inches down from the coronet band.

I assume that this would be his front shoe causing this but why?

Any one give me an explanation of why this is happening, is it a sign of anything bad and what can I do to help?

Thanks!

I don't see how he could do that with a front hoof, forging is the hind striking the fore shoe. Perhaps he had an accident a while ago and its just growing out if theres nothing above it. If he has similar on all 4 hooves then its probs a nutrition thing

Nope, it's just the one hoof that effected.

I do sometimes hear him clunking his hooves together.

He is obviously kicking the back of his front shoe with his hind hoof wall. Talk to the farrier about it and see what he can do, just could be that the one shoe is slightly wider than the other it can make all the difference!!
