My new horse came with a string girth and I hate it. She seems happy enough with it and it does the job but it picks up every particle of hair, sweat and dirt that it comes into contact with so is consequently filthy. I've had to wash it 3 times and I've only had her just over 2 weeks! I'm sure it pinches her a bit too and I've just this minute ordered her a leather one, partially because the string one is now too big as she has lost weight. On the plus side, I assume it provides some level of breathability as there are gaps between the string pieces.

I love string girths and use them on a number of horses/saddles, and I have never had a pinch or gall from one either. They are soft, breathable (obviously), conform to every horses shape, nearly impossible to over-tighten and easy to clean (just pop in the wash - I do mine once a week). I use black or brown, so they don't show the dirt at all. Stubben make lovely soft cord ones.

Love Stubben string girths. Lots of endurance riders use them. Ideal for a sensitive horse or one which is likely to be getting very sweaty.

Stubben do a lovely thick cord string girth. Much better than the thin nylon ones of my youth.

I have a stubben cord girth and it is lovely, soft and breathable and wide. Doesn't rub my very sensitive mare.

stubben was too wide for my chaps girth space and it bunched up behind his elbows, it was lovely and soft though!

Have been thinking of getting one of the Stubben girths but ride with a dressage saddle so I think I would need something to protect the horse's side from the buckles.

The main reason I hadn't used one previously was because all the ones I had seen had one buckle and I thought it was too dangerous, but I have got a two buckle one arriving next week for the one horse (he sweats a lot and I like the breathability) having looked at a stubben in a tack shop it was very soft, looking at old threads it seams a love it or hate it, some horses hate any other girth and others hate string (and some had no preference) but the main issue was some horses they pinched, will wait and see.
