I bought a colt basically at birth I phoned his breeder a friend of mine if she minded doing the string test now he is 3 months old to get an estimate of his mature height !
Well when he was born he did get a bit stuck and vet had come out to help he mentioned it was one of the biggest newborns he had ever seen !
His mum is 16hh warmblood and his dad is 16.3hh 4 year old warmblood so prob won't have finished growing yet , I expected about 16.2hh at maturity BUT string test comes back at 17.1hh !!
So in reality how accurate is the string test ?

Only works on yearlings i believe :)

I also heard it's not much use before 1 year old.

I tried it on mine a while back (young and old alike :p), just out of interest, not attaching any great scientific meaning to it or anything, I was quite surprised that it was pretty accurate (+- an inch) on the adult horses I measured. NOT saying it's going to be accurate all the time, it just worked out that it seemed in the ball park. Obviously I don't know how accurate it is going to be yet with the youngsters, will have to wait until they stop growing and see! (It's come out at the kind of heights I was expecting for the babies though, barring one that better stop growing before then).

Well I did it on my 2yr old cob last year in february, and he was 13.3hh then. He's now 14.3hh. The string test said 15.1hh I think it will be right as he just keeps growing. I've got no idea on his parentage.

The string test is fairly accurate IMO. I string test my foals and then as late yearlings I stick them just to make sure they are still on track. My youngsters have typically all grown to very close to what the string test has shown.

That's good to know , I'm just a bit concerned I will need a step ladder , oxygen mask and parachute being that high up lol !
I'm 5'7" and ride my sisters 17hh warmblood aswell so not too concerned about him making 17.1hh .
It's amazing how these old wives tales have good accuracy !

I dont know what string test ive been using then as I was told measure from point of elbow to fetlock then take that length and measure up from point of elbow to get approx end height. . That made my filly 15.1 which sounds about right for her

Don't know about string tests op, but in the interest of scaring you, friend has a youngster out of a 16.2 mare by 16 hh stallion, at 3 its 18hh. Never did string test on it though.

I did the string test with my yearling and he measured out at 16 inches, so 16hh. He's well on the way to making that. I also took a picture of him standing with his mam to compare the height of their knees when he was 5 month old. His knees were already higher than his mams then so I know he'd make bigger than her and she was a good 15.2hh.

Thanks for that lol ! I really don't mind what height he becomes as long as he makes 16.2hh plus I am fine with that.
Height isn't an issue as long as they have a good attitude and I'm sure he will, he gets handled daily and will do when I get him at weaning
:):)
