One of the horses on the yard has started to pick his back leg up when you put boots on him then walks it off fine he has a splint on the inside of the leg that he has had for a while but it is rather flat !!

any way he all of a sudden cant move back easily and points his leg but then will do it when you make him

Do you think this is the first signs of Stringhalt - what is the best thing to do to manage this ????

does he kind of waggle it in the air a bit?
Pidge has strignhalt and I've found it much better since putting him on NAF D-Tox. Have to up the dosage when the grass is coming through as that tends to make him worse.

no its when i walk backwards he sort of points his toe only in the mornings !!

then with the boots he picks it up once a little higher than normal and then walks off fine !!

My big TB has stringhalt, I keep him as warm as possible and just make sure he is loosened up before I do any strenuous work with him. I also try to ride him before the farrier comes as this helps and I also give him a couple of bute the night before if its really cold.
I use a magnetic rug too.
Watch the horses walking round at the start of any steeplechase and most of them have it!

I would say this horse has it very very very mildly maybe bandaging his legs now its winter !!!

does anyone know what causes it i was reading earlier its a disease - i never knew that ???????????????????

yep sounds like stringhalt as can come on when moving them backwards or if they stood a while and then moved.
doesn't affect Pidge in any way other than I like him to have been out before being shod.
It is an involuntary muscle reaction, lost count of the number of times I move him over for someone and then have to say "he's not trying to kick you he has stringhalt"

even if he is stood still for a while its only once he does it he wont carry on doing it ?? i have even flexion tested him and he is sound ??

when i fed him this morning he was fine though - i think i may put bandages on him to keep him warm xx
