One of my horses is displaying a strange gaite in one hindleg looking similar to stringhalt. He is 29years old ex racing T/B All the horses have been looning about the last couple of days when I fetched him in yesterday he looked a bit off behind suspected an abcess so poulticed and got some puss out but his walk is similar to stringhalt snatching the one back leg up in a jerky action (the one with the abcess). He is ok in himself mouching about grazing and eating his hard feed fine but the action cocerns me he has always been awkward behind since getting elderly vet diagnosed spavins. He is retired so lives happily in the fields with aceess to a pole barn I have booked the vet out for monday as it doesn't feel like an emergency as he is ok in himslef and pottering about happily if somewhat oddly! They are out 24/7 with acess to a bedded down pole barn with plenty of hay if they want to com in.
Could he have injured himdself looning about resulting in strinhalt? If is what treatment is there?
Just concerned given his age and the fact he can be a stressy T/B

He could have strained it running about. A horse at our yard has this and I believe there is no treatment for this apart from probably some bute and as much turnout as possible.

I think you are right vet suggested bute over the weekend (I keep some as given his age he does need it sometimes if its very cold or wet in winter)so he has had some bute. They live out 24/7 and theres a fair amount of grass so mouching about grazing a lot of the time.Tonight when I went out to feed the two veterans he came trotting up the field he looked like a bicycle with square wheels! but a lot better than he was still a little pus coming from his foot when I changed the poultice my guess is he bruised or stood on a flint and strained himself looning about with the others.Honestly he is 29 and was rearing boxing out and galloping (ex racer ) when will he ever learn that at his age its not wise.

Bless him! 29 and still got some sparkle about him...thats great. I'd just keep him warm and out and on bute. Lol thats a very good description about square wheels. Thats how the horse on our yard was described as being,,,I'd forgotten that!
