In light of me been offered to ride one of the ponys at my mates yard, I've been told that he will take the p*ss (although apparently hes been an for his current rider, its just his mom he tests) and will try to canter off up grass verges even if hes not been ridden on them. Are there any tips you could give me to prevent this??

I think you have to try him and make up your own mind, sometimes a person can have a perception that their horse is strong, when simply it is naturally stepping out faster or stronger than they are comfortable with, they tighten up, and start this circle of fighting against each other that inevitably leads to the horse bursting out forwards or upwards.

This may be one of those cases.

ride him for yourself first and see what you think - could have been a result of a novice / ineffectual rider and the horse may not even try it with you

I would go and see the horse being ridden or ride him yourself that is the only way you will know what he is truley like, other people may class the horse as strong but you may find him managable.

Get a good feel for him in the school first before you take him out...
The trick with a strong pony is not not give them anything to get strong against - e.g keep a light contact do all the riding with your seat and legs. \If hes been ridden by someone who is strong and fixed with their hands, it is probably why he has been strong himself

We don't have a school at the yard, we only have a paddock to ride in which the YO doesn't like you riding in if theres been lots of rain as it churns it up.

I'm taking him up the road tomorrow if the weather is any better with his owner on her other horse
