hi i was mucking out my TB 5yo mare this after noon and her urine stank very strongly! i was crying my face off, now is there a reason for this?? is it something to do with the immune system? exercise? too much, too less? anything? it usually doesnt smell, could it be the stable? i skip her out in the morning so i only take out whats visible like dropings but then she gets a muck out in the evening and clean straw every other day.. might not be but just in case, it doesnt smell usually just tonight but i cleaned it out just like any other day at the same time? any suggestions?
thankls xxx

i use a product called dyeretic (think thats the spelling)from equine america it flushes them out. is good on mares and geldings

First of all HH, don't panic! There could be any number of totally harmless reasons why your mare's pee smells strong. It's been hot here for a few days. Is she drinking enough? Is she peeing the same amount or less? Is she in season? Has a new sexy gelding moved onto the yard? Could she be pregnant??? Have you changed her feed at all...anything, however small? Has she changed fields? Just gone out onto spring grazing? Dandelions are coming through now and they are natural diuretics. Diuretics just make the kidneys work harder and so animals (or people) pee a lot more. Be careful of giving her diuretics without knowing why her pee has altered. If you encourage more water to be passed out of her system she either needs to take more in or she could get dehydrated. Are you able to get a sample and hold it up to the light or dip a clean WHITE tissue into it to see if it looks pink at all? If it was me, I'd carefully observe for a day or 2 and it might just disappear. But if you think she looks distressed or has a raised temperature (which could indicate a simple urinary tract infection) or there is blood in her urine, I'd get the vet out pronto. Good luck!

have you upped her feed or changed it in any way? Horses cant store protein and any excess is turned into ammonia by the liver and flushed out by the kidneys.

My mares wee has horrificly smelly when I mucked her out the other day, then I noticed she had come into season!

My mare's wee always smell strong because she has a high hormone level - the vet said not to worry as it isn't high enough to worry about, just above normal.

As others have said - is she due/or in season. I have noticed my mares always rather smelly at this time.

I have also noticed Chancer is a stinky chap from time to time - normally if he has gorged his salt lick which he does now and then.

If you are really concerned and she is not looking herself, try to catch a widdle in a bucket and check the colour or to see if there is blood in it.

ah thank you people. Well where do i start, she has been fed on course mix, sugar beat, sweet mix and rolled barley over the winter and i havent changed it a bit. However, she has been turned out more now earlier and longer when i am not riding her and whats more, she is a horendous tart, dear god, she flirts with all the stallions she sees at our stud and always gives them a look back when we are hacking and fluters her eyelashes so she is practically in season 24/7 when it comes to men she aint going any where near our stallions while with us i can assure her that lol!
so thanks again people:):)
