really need help with son's pony, brought pony last year and having a nightmare of time lately, pony is a 7 year old mare, she hates being in her stable and is even worse when the other horses get turned out and shes left in (shes not on her own) she is 10 times worse when shes in season!!! what can we do???? im at my wits end now, she was so quiet when we went and saw her and is most of the time, BUT when shes in a mood shes a little madam!!!!!

You could try her on a calmer although some horses just don't like being in.

Can she see other horses when she's in? Is there the option to keep her out 24/7?

Take a deep breath!

Have you spoken to your vet about her moods? Is she only in this mood when in season? Worst in Summer than winter?
Is she on any supplements?
Maybe look at the feed she is on and the routine... does she have a strict routine?
Some mares thrive on strict routines, and hate it when something changes!

The mare I ride (and want :D) is a right stroppy one when she wants to be... Whens shes good shes very very good, when shes bad shes horrid!

She loves routine and calmnes too. She really hates being on a busy yard, and when I go down to pamper her, and take her away and groom her on one of the smaller quieter yards and she completely changes!!

I would look into her routine - is she on full livery? DIY? Some mares prefer one to one.

Sorry for all the questions, but us women are very complex sometimes! :D

lippy- no havent spoken to vet yet but will do!!!
she's on diy, was living out 24/7 over summer which suited her well but cant really leave her out now as my other one is in doesnt do the cold lol
she cant actually see the others unless one puts there head out!! but doesnt normally bother her this much as it does when shes in season, she actually escaped from her stable the other day just barged right through me which is not normally her

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

oh dear... id talk to your vet tbh if shes that bad.. or think about moving??

more turnout??

i feel very lucky - my mare is very very lovly... chilled and never puts her ears back... she should be a gelding lol!.....

Ohboy,

I would talk to your vet about trying her on Regumate - it has changed my TB mare's life to one of permanent calm. It must have been horrible for her to feel this hormonal (in her case, 2 weeks out of every 3!). And don't let the vet tell you mares don't need it in the winter because they don't cycle - some do just as bad at christmas as in the middle of June.

If the Regumate works and her behaviour is due to her seasons, you *should* see an improvement with the stabling issue too - as other have said, some horses are happier out 24/7 even in winter but if that's not an option, try and limit the amount of time she spends in to the bare minimum - i.e. only at night-time and with a strict routine as to what time she gets in and out each day, so she always knows what to expect and doesn't get anxious when others are going out - and if her hormones do not give her any jip, she ought to be able to tolerate it.

Good luck x

My mare WAS exactly the same with being stabled esp when other horses/people moving about on the yard, i was on the verge of selling her - i just couldn't cope. Then my YO suggested i try oestress, she said she knew of a mare that worked wonders on and was deffiantly worth a try, we've been using it for a week & its completly changed her. Seriously worth the money, deffiantly made life alot easier - esp stabling & seasons !

pps; im not some advertising company just very enthusiastic about this product as it helped me soo much
