Got six months in prison for DV on a previous partner (which is actually no mean feat given it's quite difficult to prosecute for those offences) and fractured the pelvis of his dog by chucking it out his car. Plus this. POS deserves to stay in prison and have the key chucked away.
 
I cannot understand how the courts accepted that the other animals that are kept at his place of residence are not at risk because his partner cares for them not him! How damn ridiculous, he should never, ever be allowed near any animal ever again, let alone reside in the same property. All dogs and other animals at that address should be removed immediately. The law is a complete and total bleddy ass!:mad: I agree with Goldie's Mum, at some point this scumbag will kill a person or even a child, if he hasn't already.:rolleyes:
 
I’m not defending the farrier in any way but my farrier told me that their code of practice says that all horses should be held by someone during shoeing - not just tied up and left. My horses are very good to shoe but occasionally they need a bucket of nuts to occupy them to stop them fidgeting. Shoeing is a bloody difficult job and virtually impossible to do properly unless the horse stands absolutely still. I really don’t think any farrier should be left on his own with a horse for safety reasons. What if he tripped and fell or got knocked over and hit his head rendering him unconscious?
 
My farrier is happy to do Bobbi alone if necessary, but she is very well behaved and either eats hay or falls asleep. I trust him not to beat her though as he is a nice bloke and not a n*bber like the one in the article.

My farrier is a lovely man. He is so laid back. He won't come and shoe if he is feeling poorly or in pain as he says this is when it's easy to loose your temper. He has such a lovely way with the horses. I'm always present when he comes for no other reason than a good natter and to make sure my horses feet are ok.
 
I am surprised farriers do it without someone present and not unusual. I have always been there to hold them, discuss problems if he finds them etc and to pay. I want to be there for any interaction with my animals for reassurance to them, firmness if needed and see it as my responsibility. Every day is a learning day in the equine world.
 
I agree @nagblagger. I think if I wasn’t there to hold my horse my farrier would just leave. (After trying to contact me I assume) I don’t think they’d fancy putting the effort in to catch them from the field for a start.

If my horse wouldn’t stand without being held I would expect a farrier to stop the trimming and tell me I need to be there to hold the horse, not attack them with a hammer.
 
The farriers I know who are happy to or prefer to shoe alone have a lot of hunters on their list. Both have said that they prefer getting on with the job without idle constant chit chat from the owners.

I was the owner that was almost always present...

Now I trim my own, phew, no need to pander to a farrier's ego.

ETA. One of these was the duty farrier at Aintree for the Grand National and you'd sometimes see his backside on the tv as he replaced a plate at the start. He had had a list of high profile clients in the showing and racing world who gradually sacked him as he kept laming horses, including, as it turned out, mine.

So you don't actually need to be any good at the job or good at handling horses to get a swanky job as farrier to the top race meetings ☹️.
