I have recently bought a new project to bring on and sell on etc. She is 6 and i am treating her as though she hasn't been broken-she was sold to me without having been ridden but her previous owner thought she had been backed as a 3 yr old. Anyway, been getting on really well but have noticed that when tacked up she finds it harder to get her hind legs under her for canter-she isn't lame but just looks awkward.. anyone else had this problem?? will be having her back looked at asap!

Is her saddle fitted to her? The front panels may be restricting her shoulders?

Just a thought

Getting her back checked is a very good idea. It could be a stiffness through the back causing it. Also get the fit of the saddle checked. It could also be lack of balance if she is being rebacked.

good thought but yes saddle fits fine-its a balance saddle too so if anything should give her more room over shoulders. i think it all coming from pelvis-just find it odd how its more exagerated with saddle on, makes me worry she has a problem with weight on her back (not ideal for a horse!)

Try: different pads, saddler, back person.

Little Cob used to canter like a constipated cow when viewed from behind! His canter is lovely to sit to when he canters like that. Daughter has learnt to get him to engage his bum and now he canters in a proper three time, but Daughter says it's harder to sit to as it's now so bouncy!

So maybe its a learning and experience and proper use of body thing.
